5 out of 5 stars Kindle is Amazing   July 8, 2008

The Kindle is great! It is very easy to use, books arrive within seconds of ordering. I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves to read and especially those who travel regularly. No more lugging books around in your suitcase.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!   July 8, 2008

A wonderful new product! Sure it's not perfect, a bit slow, maybe the screen is a tad small and buttons misplaced or mis-sized, but it you focus on its positives - WOW!

Wonderful magazine and newspaper reader, even greater potential for reference works you'd like to have handy - Robert's Rules of Order (available), Hugh Johnson's annual wine guide (not), and travel guides (a hugh market that needs developing).

Hopefully, more periodical publishers (The New Yorker, Barron's, more foreign newspapers, etc.) will give it a try - the Kindle has made the "future" of publishing available today.

The Kindle is exactly what I expected - a sleek, portable library. The only criticism I have is about the number of books available for purchase (though Amazon is constantly expanding the selection). Ordering items for the Kindle could not be easier, and overall I am extremely happy with the purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Amazon's Kindle   July 8, 2008

The Kindle is a good substitute for a book and I like the one I just bought.

First, let me run through the negatives.

It is pricey - mine cost almost $400 with New York tax (there is no shipping charge).

It needs to be reset if you leave it off the charger too long.

It doesn't have color capabilities so don't use it to buy a book of great art. The black and white pictures aren't so great either.

Now to the positives.

It is lightweight, easy to read (you can increase the font size which is useful if you're my age), and easy to carry and handle. It is very well designed and is user-friendly.

It is a snap to download books and they are cheaper than book stores.

In a few years, kids will not have to fill book bags, they can just kindle them and use their Kindles.

If you lose your Kindle or if it is stolen, Amazon can cripple its functionality. Unlike an IPod, this will make it less attractive to thieves.

Overall, this is a new entry into a very promising technology. I recommend it highly.

I've had my Kindle for bout two months now and overall I love it. Buying and downloading books is very easy and the selection available is very good. I must add, however, that I'm on my second Kindle device. The first one "died" at a very inopportune moment--I had it loaded with books to read on my way to a 3 week trip to Europe. I switched it on at the airport and the screen froze. Consequently, I had nothing to read during the trip (I had to break down and buy an overpriced paper book at an airport bookstore).

That said, when I returned from my trip Amazon promptly replaced my Kindle--very quickly with no questions asked, and all has been well ever since.

It's a great device and I'd recommend it highly.
