Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The Jawbone 2 is the next step in the integration of best-in-class noise elimination technology with personal design that is both humanistic and minimal. It has powerful noise suppression algorithms for use in the most extreme acoustic noise environments including battlefields and helicopters. The algorithms use Jawbone's two microphones and the VAS (Voice Activity Sensor) to accurately model the noise environment. Jawbone detects when and how a person is speaking, models the noise, and aggressively eliminates it. Conventional "noise eliminating" headsets do not have the VAS and can only estimate when speech is occurring with software-based Voice Activation Detection (VAD) systems. For these systems to work, the speech must be significantly louder or spectrally different from the noise. These systems fail in loud environments or in the presence of other people's speech. Furthermore, because they can't accurately identify the speech signals, they distort the speech in the process of attempting to eliminate the noise. The result of this distortion is a significant degradation in intelligibility and quality in order to achieve a perceptual reduction in noise.

Amazon.com Product Description
Setting new standards for mobile voice clarity and personal style, the new Jawbone Bluetooth headset by Aliph represents a complete departure from the gadgetry of the mobile headset industry. Originally developed for military use in extreme environments, Jawbone features NoiseAssassin--a proprietary technology that eliminates background noise from mobile phone conversations. Jawbone is the only Bluetooth headset with a Voice Activity Sensor (VAS) that actually feels your speech, which helps Jawbone distinguish your voice from background noise.

The new Jawbone in black.
Widely recognized as the best Bluetooth headset on the market, the new Jawbone is 50 percent smaller than the original, award-winning Jawbone, offer over 4 hours of talk time, and comes with three earbuds and four earloops for a comfortable and personalized fit.

Military-Grade NoiseAssassin Technology
Developed over years of research for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Jawbone's NoiseAssassin eliminates real world noise better than competing headset because it's the only hands free device that accurately separates human speech from ambient noise. Unmatched in its ability to remove noise from loud environments like busy streets, cars, crowded cafes, and airports, NoiseAssassin is comprised of two features unique to Jawbone: a patented Voice Activity Sensor (VAS) and proprietary Digital Signal Processing (DSP) algorithms. Jawbone is the only Bluetooth headset with a VAS that feels the speech vibrations from your jaw. This enables Jawbone to capture the distinct frequencies of your voice. Proprietary DSP algorithms work in concert with two powerful microphones and the VAS to accurately model surrounding noise and aggressively eliminate it from the conversation.

Conventional "noise suppression" headsets do not have a Voice Activity Sensor and can only estimate when speech is occurring. This causes performance issues like voice distortion, especially in the presence background noise.

Not Just a Headset, It's Earwear
Made with premium materials like medical-grade plastic and fine leather, the new Jawbone with NoiseAssassin combines science and beauty in the most unassuming, yet richly detailed product. Every effort has been made to contain best in class noise suppression technology in a miniature form that is 50 percent smaller than the original, award-winning Jawbone.

The new Jawbone accomplishes a clean and sophisticated look thanks to invisible buttons. Touch-surface technology allows the user to operate switches by lightly pressing the outer shield. Curved and rectilinear to follow the face, the outer shield is lightly textured and inspired by three-dimensional noise abatement surfaces. The infer surface, the one touching your face and creating contact with the Voice Activity Sensor, is gently curved to be ergonomic and comfortable on your skin.

Offering a comfortable and personalized fit, the new Jawbone comes with three sizes of earbuds and four earloops--two sizes of leather and two of slim, which are ideal for use with eyeglasses. Jawbone can also be worn on either ear and with or without an earloop.

2 out of 5 stars Of no value to the bearded among us   November 5, 2008
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

Like it's predecessor, The Aliph Jawbone 1, this sleeker and lighter version has the same essential flaws. 1) It is simply not comfortable to wear and 2) because the technology was developed by clean shaven men (or women) the device must come in contact with the user's cheek to achieve best results. A man with a beard has something on his face that does not permit that direct contact - whiskers. The difference is appreciable, rendering this highly rated device all-but-useless for any man with a beard.
For a mere $20., the Samsung WEP200 is a far better and more adaptive device for day-to-day use.

5 out of 5 stars Still the best noise cancelling, but a few minor irritations   November 2, 2008

General Summary: I love this headset. Better than any of the MANY other headsets I have - even those costing more!

I also own the original Jawbone, so my thoughts are mostly a comparison between the two. For the most part, the Jawbone II makes an almost perfect headset almost "perfecter". No wireless headset cancels background noise better. Those of you that don't use a jawbone - you have no idea how annoying it is to talk to you with all the noise around you... The jawbone should be required so other people can hear you!

In terms of sound, the new model handles wind better, so it's better outside (although not in a high wind or with the convertible top down...)

The best part of the new Jawbone II is how light and small it is. The original was just a bit bulky and heavy, so my ear would get sore after a long call. It also had a very hard to use ear loop system.

That's where the big improvement is for the JB-II. It's so light you forget you have it on. The simplified earloop is much better, as well. Unfortunately they don't include extras so be careful when bending it to make adjustments! If you break the earloop, you are out of luck until you can order more...

What I don't like: The main button is too easy to push and goes from edge to edge. Every time I try to adjust it while on a call, I hang the phone up person I'm talking to. That drives me crazy, especially since it's so light that it is harder to keep snugly in place.

And that's my other complaint. The new earloop and speaker buds don't hold it on my head as well. If it comes loose, I hang up the call if I try to adjust it. Once I finally got it to fit, I still found the need to adjust it during calls and then hanging up when I touched it.

I've even gone to using the earloops from my original jawbone, which helped some. I finally got the JB-II loops to fit, I've really enjoyed using it.

Other than holding it on my face and the button being too sensitive, this thing is amazing and I highly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars Jawbone II is a serious step down from the original Jawbone   October 14, 2008

This smaller, sleaker Jawbone II is a real disappointmnet!! All of the issues that many of the reviews have mentioned I experienced in my first five minutes using this earpiece. The earpiece does not fit on the ear, when you adjust it, the earpiece turns off because of the poor placement of the on/off switch (which is HIDDEN too). The JBII has to be touching your cheek for callers to hear you, otherwise, you fade out which happened to me constantly. If you adjust it, it'll shut off.

My advice - DON'T BUY THE JAWBONE II. It's a waste of money!!! I bought a plantronics which works great.

1 out of 5 stars Awful Company!   October 12, 2008

DON'T FALL FOR THIS POORLY MADE GIMMICK by ALIPH, WITH ITS UNCONCERNED CUSTOMER SERVICE. The Jawbone is, by far, the worst headset I have ever come across! Aliph seems more about marketing than substance. I wish I could reassign the rating and give one-eighth star. This company is bad news!

I barely got to use the Jawbone three times before the earplug into which the earhook slides came loose, exposing the wires. I have cases for all my headsets to protect them and gingerly care for them.

The Jawbone came apart just before the warranty ran out, therefore my letter reached Aliph after the warranty expiration date so Aliph has refused to replace the headset - THAT WAS USED NO MORE THAN 3 TIMES BEFORE COMING APART!

Although the Jawbones are highly marketed, there are innumerable customer complaints over the Internet about how poorly built these headsets are. Aliph seems to turn a deaf ear and seems to feel it is their due to gimmick poorly designed, ill-built, over-priced dross.

The way Aliph markets the Jawbone and at the price, no one should have to tweak one thing to make the headset work or fit.

I wish I had known the Jawbone was all utter hype before getting fleeced by Aliph for $149.50! This earplug is extremely difficult to get on the ear. I had to fight with my Verizon UT6700 to get it working and most of all the sound was little better than the UT6700, which is disastrous!

I have the Plantronics Voyager, as well as several other headsets by BlueAnt, Jabra, and Motorola. I bought the Plantronics 925 and received a BlueAnt V1 after the Jawbone dispatched itself. The Plantronics Voyager 510 Bluetooth Headset with Multipoint Technology, Plantronics Discovery 925 Bluetooth Headset (Black), the Jabra are much better quality head sets and work distinctly better. I haven't tried the BlueAnt V1 Voice-Controlled Bluetooth Headset (Silver) yet. None of the headsets are any where near the "SHABBY JAWBONE" Category! Aliph owns that one!

Don't fall for the name and the back and don't get RIPPED OFF!

1 out of 5 stars All hype, no substance   October 7, 2008

I have several Bluetooths and I am a heavy user. I waited for this unit to be released because the former model was to big. Everyone I spoke with using this unit complained of feedback and echo. If you adjust it while it is on your ear, it will disconnect if it looses contact with your face. The volume isn't as loud as other units I use.

For this price it needs to have multi-point as well.

I am very disappointed.
