Players can now perform double teams on opponents, such as having one player hold an opponent against the ropes while on the apron, or pulling down on ropes while an opponent is running to send them out of the ring. And there are now different ways of tagging in, such as the forced blind tag and reversible hot tag. Teams also get team-specific finishing moves that are incredibly satisfying to perform. In addition to tag matches, there are 14 one-on-one match types including the Inferno, Gauntlet, Falls Count Anywhere, Steel Cage and Ladder matches, and even a Backstage Brawl. Road to Wrestlemania Mode The single player Road to Wrestlemania mode offers a deep and diverse story line that is filled with brand defections, team building, and strategic alliances. You can choose from Triple H, CM Punk, The Undertaker, John Cena, and Chris Jericho to play in this single-player mode. SVR2009 Back with a Vengeance!!! November 15, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I was a bit disappointed with Smackdown vs Raw 2008, but THQ out did themselves with Smackdown vs Raw 2009! I love this game!!! I prefer my own CAWS and they delivered big time!! Create your own finishers, highlight reel, and the AI has really improved! If you can only buy one game this is the one!
WWE SvR 2009 gives enough new and tweaks for a buy! November 14, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Hello everyone! Personally, I strongly recommend this 2009 version of Smackdown vs Raw 2009 because right from the start it feels FRESH. Why? Well, this is the first year TAG TEAMS (co-op) are the main focus and attraction. It is BALANCED by far over 2008. Every superstar big or SMALL can WIN given you memorize the moves in the game booklet and practice--learning curve a few hours. Your COMPUTER PARTNER is fairly aggressive and the AI is the best to date. HINTS for moves are given to you during the match, which you can select off or on. The STORY LINES are pretty good. DX is spot on for a game. Signature moves and Finishers are used almost the same during play so you don't have somebody keep doing the same powerful move repeatedly. It is a 1-2 punch kind of deal. For example: HBK needs a signature stored to do his elbow drop then, meanwhile you are building up for your Sweet Chin Music finisher to execute. Those can be mixed around and done differently each time. There are ways now of GETTING BACK in the game, if you are losing without CHEATING. SvR 2008 was horrible on-line thanks to cheaters using the biggest guys (Rampage mode) and T-speed connections vs broadband. OPTIONS to choose from is the biggest. It is the LOWEST amount of items you must unlock to enjoy the game you bought, rented, or borrowed. Past years, unlocking things was a real pain and not right. Now, you can do this all without finger blisters, ruined controllers, tension headaches, and losing friends. You will notice a MUCH BIGGER ROSTER in years of today's superstars and ZERO LEGENDS to play with. Why? WWE adds on disc a preview of the Legends of Wrestlemania game by THQ (same quality company) coming next year in March, which will contain Stone Cold, The Rock, Hogan, Andre the Giant, Rowdy Piper, Eddie Guerrero, Bret Hart, Mr. Perfect and so on--likely by guess. Do NOT worry! WWE legends will be separate and given the first class treatment we are accustomed to playing now. Please do NOT confuse the upcoming game with the crappy old Legends of Wrestling game series made by bad programmers. This info should ease your mind hopefully. Wrestling fans will be greeted by two THQ quality games a year. The Rock and Stone Cold have not wrestled since WM 19 and WM 20 so it makes sense. Getting back to the current game out now, I suggest going straight for the Road to Wrestlemania mode first before entering Career Mode, other modes, and most of all ON-LINE. The PS3 version is almost the same as the XBOX 360 version. Quality wise it is the same. The main difference is the LAYERS you can use creating wrestlers. I believe layers are doubled on the XBOX, which I can not understand. Surprisingly, the game runs off the disc drive completely instead of partially downloading to the hard drive. The PS3 has the advantage of being FREE to play on-line vs XBOX 360 you PAY for service. Keep in mind most people do not spend endless hours creating great looking custom wrestlers--it is tedious and very time consuming. If you do devote serious hours on making wrestlers and hardcore about it then go for the XBOX 360 version. The rumor mill out there tells of THQ likely giving those layers back to PS3 owners either for free or a small price at the Playstation on-line store. Also, more updated wrestlers and story lines are possible using the download data mode. Keeping the roster current has always been the hardest for THQ. The Next-gen consoles provide the opportunity for add-ons to games. If WWE/THQ decide to try making updates available via on-line store and customers pay good money to make it worth while, then we all may have something extra to offer/look forward to. Waiting on an update a year later is not cool when watching WWE on TV ever changing. I am not going to tell everyone to run out and pay $50-60 for this game. Then again, I honestly would not tell everyone to buy ANY game ever made without thinking he or she may not like it for whatever reason. People like what they like and we are all different. Plus, games come down in price over time--six months usually. Therefore, it is a matter of how badly you want it and what you can afford. Most of us think certain games, movies, and music are "no brainers" when buying or even renting. Personally, I happily evolved from a narrow picker to wide ranger of likes due to being ex-military living in dorms. Now at age 32, games are not the priority they use to be. Still, I like them just as much when very young. If you enjoyed the past series of games or did NOT, I would definitely say try this one out. It's the most addictive one in the series for me since I started playing PS2 Smackdown:Shut your mouth & Here Comes The Pain, and SvR 2007(XBOX 360).
Not great but good! November 13, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The 2009 version is much improved then the 2008. I think its a good game just shy of great. The graphics and sound are much better. The biggest difference however is the loading times. This game loads MUCH faster then the previous 2008 version.
More of the same November 10, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
After playing for a few hours, you may realize that this game is just more of the same. The game just doesn't feel new.
Good points: Really interesting story mode. This time, it's wrestler specific, so the story mode is much more fleshed out. You will probably get most enjoyment out of this mode.
But that is about it in terms of good points.
There is create a finisher mode, which I previously thought had a lot of potential. But after playing with it for a few hours, I realized that the mode is really limited. Based upon what moves you pick in the first few steps, the rest of the steps become more and more limited in terms of what moves you can add. So you can't really create that many amazing looking finishers. If this mode had received more attention, I definitely would have given one more star to the game.
Then there is a new match type, inferno. Yup.
Everything else about the game just feels stale. The game looks same, feels same, and moves the same way. This is my biggest disappointment about the game. The game suffers from this yearly development cycle. How much new stuff can the developers add in about 9 - 10 months before they release next game. Not much. And it shows. But the problem is that every year, people keep buying it, and they keep making money off these games.
Go and download the demo on psn. If you like it, then you will probably enjoy the rest of the game as well. But if you didn't get any enjoyment out of the demo, then skip over this iteration. There is always going to be another one next year.
A Real Improvement. November 9, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
The Smackdown game series since about Here Comes the Pain has been on a downward spiral. Many loyal fans of the series abandoning it because they felt like THQ were putting the minimal effort into the game, simply because they knew it would sell. In many ways they were justified for turning their back on the series as it gave THQ the wake up call they needed. This game seems like one of the very first games in the series that a hell of a lot of effort was put into it. With a massive roster, an easy to use yet detailed controlling system and a beefed up tag system this game was bound to be a success. First off THQ needs to reassure the abandoning fans that this is a very different game from the originals. One way in doing that is giving them one thing the fans have always wanted, a "create a finisher" mode. The very notion that you can now create your own finisher is something that the fans think will make a massive difference to such a game. Anyway, the modes are going to be discussed in a minute but in a nutshell this game is really good.
The Roster: This contains over 60 wrestlers, none of them legends but the sheer size of the roster itself is enough to allow you to effectively use the newly updated tag team system. The real gem for this particular installment is the announcement that in order to keep the rosters from becoming out dated, THQ are going to finally utilise the Playstation Network by allowing downloadable content. This will not only feature wrestlers but will allow other additions such as possible new storylines or looks for current superstars to match what is going on in TV land. The first announcement of the DLC is although there is not yet a date, superstars Evan Bourne and Ted DiBiase Jr. are confirmed to be a part of it along with a few other little things.
Game Modes: In exchange for the previous installments WWE 24/7 mode, we're now given Road to Wrestlemania and Career Mode. Road to Wrestlemania is essentially a shortened Season Mode starting from around the Royal Rumble and is tailor made for specific superstars. A drawback to this is that you can only play as either Triple H, CM Punk, Undertaker, John Cena, Chris Jericho or Batista & Rey Mysterio as part of a co-op RTW play. There's also a career mode which is basically a never ending thing with no story, it's just fight to earn a shot at a title, win, then fight for another title. You can do that with anyone.
There's also the new Create A Finisher which I haven't tried yet but will get around to eventually. I've never really been fan of the create a wrestler things so if you really want to know then I'd check out other reviews.
To wrap it up in 4 simple words? I Love This Game. It's fun, it's easy and it's packed. The only problem is that when I've managed to complete all the RTW's I can imagine becoming quite un-interested with it until we get the DLC anyway. Hopefully along with new superstars, THQ will be able to give us new RTW storylines and arenas to keep us occupied with the DLC until the next installment. This type of thing will also allow THQ to give us a lot more to the game with constant updates instead of trying to put as much on the disc as possible before release date.
I'm also praying that trophies will follow eventually although it's looking doubtful for this particular installment. I would highly recommend this to anyone and everyone who's a fan of wrestling.
