Amazon.com Review Unreal Tournament 2004 isn't just an expansion pack or semi-sequel to last year's 2003 edition. It's a full blown and worthy sequel to the original Unreal Tournament, and a rock solid multiplayer and single-player game in its own right. For starters UT2004 looks fantastic. The Unreal engine is built to compete with the best graphics engines around, and Epic didn't skimp on the special effects here. The missions run the gamut from cramped, intense corridor fighting to wide-open spaces. There are plenty of vehicles to pilot, and all of your favorite weapons, from the rocket-launcher to the flak cannon. The single-player mode is still extremely strong because the robots you compete against are so well-programmed. They're not programmed to beat you, per se, but rather to play convincingly like a cadre of real people. Some are good, some are bad, they miss occasionally, and they even spout trash talk like people do online. Multiplayer is where it's at with the return of Deathmatch mode, Domination, Double Domination, Capture the Flag, the return of Assault mode (a favorite missing from the 2003 edition). A brand new concept called Onslaught challenges teams to capture Power Nodes scattered throughout the level. The game offers the fun of paint-ball with the thrill of vicarious warfare and ultra-violence, in the safety and comfort of your own office or computer room. Really, the only complaint here is the whopping 6 gigabyte hard drive installation requirement and the fact that the game requires an impressive computer to run it. Look at the system requirements carefully before buying! --Andrew S. Bub Pros: - Gorgeous graphics
- Superb multi- and single-player modes
- Onslaught mode is a great addition
Cons: - Requires a very powerful PC and a huge hard drive
Amazon.com Product Description Unreal Tournament 2004 is a multiplayer first person shooter that combines the kill-or-be-killed experience of gladiatorial combat with cutting-edge technology. Ten game modes, both team-based and "every man for himself," provide even the most hardcore gamer with palm-sweating challenges through unbelievably detailed indoor arenas and vast outdoor environments. As the ultimate techno-gladiator of the future, players will take their fates into their hands, battling against up to 32 other players online in action-packed, frag-filled arenas. Guns. Lots of guns. | Reload, rev up and ride out. The new Tournament is faster, higher and meaner. Land and air based vehicles take combat to a new level; while an arsenal of new weaponry, daunting arenas and battlefields and the challenge of the Assault and Onslaught modes make the gladiator blood sport of the future a brand new experience. Buckle up; it?s gonna be one hell of a ride! New Modes Assault Mode - Assault mode returns! Redesigned for UT2004, this fan-favorite mode sees teams face-off to defend and attack fortified bases, from fast-moving trains, barreling across an arid alien desert to a Skaarj mother ship, poised to attack the human home world. Onslaught Mode- Onslaught mode takes team combat to the next level! Opposing teams are pitted against each other to capture and hold strategic points in order to attack and destroy the enemy power core. Taking place in massive outdoor environments, here is where vehicular combat comes into its own. Flying and driving machines take combatants to the frontline and gigantic mobile battle stations serve as a platform from which to launch devastating attacks. Vehicles Take a spin in armor-plated luxury. | Rev-up and ride out in an array of land-, air-, and space-based vehicles that play critical roles in a successful combat strategy in Assault and Onslaught. With vehicles ranging from single man fighters to five man behemoths, Unreal Tournament 2004 provides players with plenty of choices when shopping for a mechanized implement of destruction. Levels Docking Bay 94 it isn't. | More than 95 maps will be available immediately, including more than 45 brand new maps for all existing game play modes as well as new modes of play. Vast outdoor environments, deep space combat areas and tightly packed indoor techno-arenas are all waiting for the latest entrants to the Tournament. Weapons The entire smorgasbord of frag-dealing weaponry from Unreal Tournament 2003 returns for the experienced player to wield masterfully against new contestants. Those armaments are joined by three new implements of doom: the Mine layer, which disperses spider-like bombs that chase and harass any enemy that comes within range; the anti vehicle rocket launcher, or AVRiL, which deals out a payload of massive rockets tuned to seek and destroy enemy mechanized units; the Grenade Launcher, which launches timed explosives that will bounce on the ground and stick to enemies and enemy vehicles, only to be triggered by the weapons altfire command; and, the return of the notorious Sniper Rifle from the original Unreal tournament, completely redesigned and upgraded to make heads roll. New Characters Meet new, interesting people--and kill them. | Unreal Tournament 2004 introduces 32 new characters on four new teams: The human Thunder Crash, lead by Tournament hero, Malcolm; the Robotic Corrupt, lead by an upgraded Xan Kriegor; the Iron Skull, a team of merciless Skaarj warriors; and the Hellions -- reckless human mercenaries and pirates who delight in the thrill of the kill. New Technology Unreal Tournament not only brings new content for hardcore fans to relish, it also delivers a tremendous technology update over its predecessor, delivering a faster, slicker, deeper experience than ever before. Still great after all these years February 28, 2008 Why am I reviewing a 4 year old game? Because it still kicks butt! I've been playing these types of games online since I had to experiment with different modem strings to get a 14.4K dial-up to work with Doom 2 deathmatch. If you want to kill lots of people and use lots of fun weapons and vehicles without having to memorize lots of buttons and commands, this is the game for you. Great graphics, not demanding for any modern computer, very fast gameplay, and you can usually find a 32-person Onslaught match any time day or night. I can't comment on the single-player mode because really, who cares about that? In the three years I've been playing this game I maybe have played five single player matches, compared to thousands of online matches. My stats show I've spent over 350 hours playing this game -- and I would gladly do it all over again. You can't go wrong with this, even now.
Best of the genre, and I started with Wolfenstein! May 18, 2007 I absolutely love this game. I've been playing 3D shooters since the inception of the genre, including the recent Quake and Unreal series.
I love the whole Unreal series, but 2004 is a huge improvement!
The Onslaught mode of play alone is worth the price.
After patching, it plays without the CD: I hate shuffling CDs.
Graphics quality is ... Unreal ... on a GeForce 6800 at 1280x1024. It runs OK on a GeForce 2 GTS as well, with some settings turned down a bit.
Tips:
1) Get the megapack which adds 2 vehicle types.
2) Vehicle Capture the Flag is built into the game, but doesn't show up as a Gametype because no levels are included. Download some and it will.
3) There's lots of good Onslaught levels out there as well.
4) Download the speech SDK and use it to control bots on your team. You can tell them to get out of a vehicle you want, and if it's a 2-person vehicle, then tell them to cover you, and they'll hop in and take the gunner position. They can also be commanded to defend the flag or a point, or attack, just by holding "f" and talking.
Very addicting game February 12, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got the game withing a week and couldn't wait to play it. It's a great game. It worked great and was very happy with my purchase. I mean, I lost the play disc but I'm sure I can always get a new one somewhere.
awsome May 15, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
this game is the best game ever made. i bought it as soon as it came out and im still playing it. the single player sucks but when you go on the mutliplayer, thats a whole different story. on the multiplayer servers, there are probabaly more then 1,000 maps altogether. it takes up alot of space in your computer, but it is worth it
Perfect game April 16, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I love this game. It is better than all the other First Person Shooters out there currently on the market. The graphics of the game are very breathtakingly stunning. If you buy yourself a decent internal graphics card you will be rewarded with gorgeous graphics. Even if you don't have a good graphics card. E.g. a graphics chip for your cpu or a Radeon 9200SE or Geforce 4. Just overclock your card like I did and you will be able to play this game in awsome detail. Not only that the gameplay ROCKS!!! For retro fans it may not seem very different at first but once you start playing a little bit. You will see the awsome new gameplay featurs. It is certanily a great game and some of the maps just ROCK!!
