What a long, strange wait it's been. Don Felder has left, a generation has grown into adulthood, and at long last, Eagles return with a new studio album, their first since 1979's The Long Run. Given the interim, though, fans couldn't possibly have asked for more. The two-disc, 20-track Long Road Out of Eden not only retains the entire menu of the Eagles' staple sounds--effortless, multi-part harmonies; colorful, if not intricate, guitar embellishment; meticulously crafted songwriting; squeaky-clean, almost geriatric production--but many of these songs also viscerally recall past hits from Eagles' or the extant members' solo records. Like revenant doubles, "Frail Grasp on the Big Picture" echoes "Life in the Fast Lane," "How Long" channels "Take It Easy," the guitar arpeggio threading through "Center of the Universe" hints at the ubiquitous "Hotel California," and "Business As Usual" could have been culled from the cutting room floor from Don Henley's The End of the Innocence. The effect of all this familiarity is one of masterfully crafted self-tribute with one eye riveted on posterity, calculated to please both the deep-pocketed who can still afford the Eagles' concerts and those who'd given up on ever hearing new material again. --Jason Kirk

... been an Eagles fan for years. This CD - especially the #1 CD - is among the best work they have ever done.
The Best Band Gets Better August 16, 2008

Wow. My wife and I went to an Eagles concert recently, with 15,000 other boomers, happily expecting to hear their greatest hits from the 70's. Imagine my surprise when the songs we were humming afer a truly excellent, smoking concert (Joe Walsh was en fuego!)were the ones from this new album. We downloaded it as soon as we got home and it is in our Fave Five ALL the time. Nothing karaoke-esque about this double cd....the Eagles continue to sell but never sell out. Their new stuff keeps us all grounded politically (the title song should be played for both political conventions this summer)and pushing us lyrically. You'll be drumming on the steering wheel saying "Yes, Don, you are still the man," and in awe of the way the songs are true to the Eagles sound but not lazy retreads. A revelation in every way, The Long Road is the road that should be taken and savored.

All I can add to the many helpful reviews is that I have over 400 CD's, culled down to only ones I really like. My taste runs from Led Zeppelin and ZZ Top to Paul Simon in principally vintage rock/pop. After just a few plays, this album has become my favorite of all of them. Very good to excellent albums will typically have 3 songs or so per disc that I really like, including double albums like this. This album has SEVENTEEN songs that I REALLY like; one instrumental I also like; and only two songs that don't hack it for me. I now own it on every form of media available and have given it to my better friends. The only negative comments I have concern production, and no one cares about that in deciding whether to get an album or not. Buy this one. It's a winner.

The Eagles should return to what made them famous and leave the political commentary to someone else. This CD should come with a warning label,
"Beware, contents contains liberal propaganda." They not only pick the low hanging fruit by making snide innuendoes about President Bush at every opportunity but the song writing is clearly missing something. If this is the best that Frey and company can do they should stay home and write crank letters to the newspaper. This CD set is NOT for anyone that loved these guys in the '70's and '80's. Maybe they've gotten bitter in old age.

Long Road Out of Eden is a good Eagles album. Most of the tunes are good - some are great even. One notices that the subject matter has gotten even more cynical over time.. There are several tunes I do like very much...Waiting In The Weeds, What Do I Do with My Heart, Do Something, Frail Grasp of The Big Picture, etc.
The harmonies are intact, and the musicianship is great. The production, I must say, is a little too slick for my tastes. This record sounds pretty sterile and ProTools-ish for my tastes.
IMO...Don Felder is noticeably absent both in sound and in spirit. His guitar playing (and other instruments) and his compositional/arranging sense gave the Eagles music a lot of power, style, and class. Now that he's gone from the band, their music just isn't the same anymore.
Its too bad that Henley and Frey (aka the powers that be) are too discontent and self-serving that they couldn't keep Don Felder who is the band's best-kept secret, and IMO the most undervalued and underrated guitarist in popular music.
