Amazon.com The Weepies are a duo of songwriters Deb Talan and Steve Tannen. How can one not help but be delighted when two such similar sound names align with one another? Perfectly matched, the thirteen songs are quiet but insistent, with lyrics full of pop smarts and poetic depth. Narratives, whether fragmented or direct, empower most of the songs, giving even first-person vantage points a solid foundation. Talan does the bulk of the lead vocals, and her voice is a confident instrument, full of sly surprise and subtle phrasing. The pair's harmonies are thoughtful and evocative, oftentimes utilizing less than obvious intervals. In fact, the chorus vocals owe more to great radio pop of the sixties and seventies than to the various contemporary strains of folk and Americana. --David Greenberger

No Crying Matter! November 22, 2008 "Say I am You" by The Weepies is an amazingly serene compilation that is excellent for driving or relaxing after work. I first heard one of their songs on Grey's Anataomy, came here to Amazon to review the CD and absolutely loved it! I can't musically describe the music--it's not soft rock, but it's soft; it's not folk, but it reminds you of winding roads. I had been searching for music that was "mature" enough for me to enjoy, (in a thirty-something range) and The Weepies definitely delivered. From the first song, "Take It From Me" to the next, and even beyond even "Riga Girls", which was a surprise, the CD will have you moving and enjoying whatever moment you're in. The vocalization, melodic and harmonic, was a big draw for me and I hope that you will try this, too...you'll like it!
A pleasant surprise October 19, 2008 I am over 60 and thoroughly enjoy this newly discovered media. I had never heard of Deb Talen before and happened on an NPR interview recently, bought this, and I am a fan. Others I have shared this music with, 30-60 year olds, seem to agree with my review. Now I am purchasing more titles and look forward to future music from The Weepies. Odd name, great music.
The Weepies will leave you weeping tears of joy! September 5, 2008 I believe I first heard The Weepies on TV late last year and eventually managed to track down more of their music. Every song on the track has become a favorite. Even ones I didn't appreciate at first ended up getting stuck in my head and after humming them for hours I'd remember where I'd heard it and run back to listen to them again and again.
My favorite off of the album is probably "Gotta Have You"...it's very catchy and has a unique beat and the lyrics are beautiful.
"World Spins Madly On" is another great track, albeit slightly depressing.
There really isn't a bad song on this album, I love each and every one of them and I think they are all of a similar quality and style. Some people may prefer more variation on an album, but I tend to like to be able to pick out one that fits my mood and not have to skip the random peppy or sappy track that they felt the need to put in to even things out. That's not to say that all of the songs are overly depressing, just that they flow well from one to the next.
Getting ready for vacation I decided I had to have this on my mp3 player for those long walks down the island...I know it will be perfect.
For those that enjoy The Weepies, you might also like the group Hem, whose songs include "Redwing" and "The Part Where You Let Go". I tend to keep them in the same playlist as The Weepies. Enjoy!

I heard one of there songs, "The World Spins Madly On", on the TV show The Riches. I actually thought that it was a new Paul Simon song when I heard it. I was taken by the song so much that I couldn't wait for the repeat of that episode so I could find out who sang it. Turns out it was the Weepies. I had never heard of them until then. After listening to the CD for a while, I put it away for a few months, then when I was watching TV I heard one of their songs as a background for a commercial. I started craving their music again, like so many of my favorite musical artists. I am actually happy that I bought this CD and can't wait to buy more of them.
Diamon In the Mine May 24, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Deb and Steve's story is a beautiful little slice of love and joy and, fortunate for us, they're both fantastic musicians and have that special gift of song to tell other people about it. What they've created here is deceptively difficult to do: they've expressed complex feelings with simple words and harmonies in ways that everyone can relate to. Compounding the miracle is that they've used a musical form that is over-saturated with drippy music trying to express itself. Somehow, their music is a diamond in that mine that is impossible to pass up. The fun and excitement with which they had making it positively radiates from the music. It's clear that they are completely at ease with each other and their musical sensibilities.
A thousand thanks to you both, Deb and Steve. This is great, great work.
