5 out of 5 stars boogie on down TONIGHT !!!   June 5, 2008
13 out of 16 found this review helpful

Pure Disco has twenty-one great tracks on it that anyone from the days of disco will remember fondly! This is the music people heard in the clubs as they danced their cares away on many a Saturday night. The music on this CD is excellent; and the quality of the sound is also very good. The artwork is great!

The Village People start things off big with their smash disco hit entitled "Y.M.C.A." "Y.M.C.A." has an awesome beat and it just might even make your kids want to dance to it! "Y.M.C.A." is classic disco and a great choice to start off this album. Abba's "Dancing Queen" is yet another great number from the golden days of disco; it may have a somewhat slower beat than other songs do but it still is great dancing music. "Hot Stuff" by Donna Summer is also classic disco, Donna Summer made many contributions to the disco archives and we're all better off for her doing that! Listen also for Gloria Gaynor doing her awesome hit, "I Will Survive." "I Will Survive" had many, many people out there on the dance floor and this is sure to bring back great memories!

Barry White's "You're The First, The Last, My Everything" is one of the most joyful, triumphant songs I've ever heard; and "Knock On Wood" by Ami Stewart sure does have that disco beat! I love it! The percussion and musical special effects mark the beat for "Knock On Wood" and Ami Stewart sings this like a champ! There's also "That's The Way (I Like It)" by K.C. & The Sunshine Band; K.C. & The Sunshine Band made some VERY good music and quite a few people were really surprised when "K.C." turned out to be a white guy with long hair down his back! I always like hearing K.C. & The Sunshine Band sing and play their awesome tunes.

"Oops Upside Your Head (I Don't Believe You Want To Get Up And Dance)" by The Gap Band is disco; but if you listen carefully you just hear the very early beat of hip-hop music coming around the corner. Interesting! The beat is very good and "Oops Upside Your Head (I Don't Believe You Want To Get Up And Dance)" is good disco dance music even today. "Love Hangover" by Diana Ross had many people up and out onto a steamy dance floor--this is a great song and Diana Ross does this with all her heart and soul; she really delves into this song to turn out a terrific performance! The song has an unforgettable melody with a beat that makes you want to jump up and start dancing nearly wherever you are.

"Funkytown" by Lipps, Inc. scored a huge hit in the disco clubs; and the mix of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" is still perfect for dancing the night away! The CD ends strong with John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John doing "The Grease Megamix." "The Grease Megamix" ends things on a very upbeat note (no pun intended) and that's fantastic.

Pure Disco is great disco music; and it makes an excellent starter CD for people who want a strong single CD sampler of this type of music. Diehard fans may well already have most of these numbers in their disco box set collections already; but if they don't have these songs they should get this album.

2 out of 5 stars Pure Pop Culture..Cashing In On "Disco" Revival Of The 90s   April 16, 2007
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

This is more or less just another danceable pop hits of the mid - late 70s collection (with a few early 80s thrown in). Folks, lets be honest here...only maybe 2 or 3 tunes actually got heavy play in the actual clubs back when (which is the reason I even give this 2 stars). All these tunes are the same tunes for the most part that are on every other so called "disco" CD compilation. For one, "Grease" is FAR from anything disco or disco related (which im happy to see a few people actually noticed!).

Where's Cerrone "Supernature", Giorgio "From Here To Eternity", Alec R. Costandinos "Romeo & Juliet", Machine "There But For The Grace Of God Go I", Jumbo "Turn On To Love" and could go on and on (probably 90% of the folks reading this right now dont even know what those tunes I mentioned are).

Those tunes I mentioned are basic common club play disco from back when...im not even goin mega deep here, just mentioning a few of the REAL disco bilboard hit basics here. Sure, to promote the pop hits, most of these tunes on this comp were played in the corse of the night in 12" remixed format...but they were not the main attraction as pop culture believes!

If anyone is truely interested to hear what disco was really about and wants to get a small taste of the hard true disco sounds, if you can find it (since its out of print), look up the CD comps The Best Disco In Town vol 3 (whole CD) and The Best Disco In Town vol.2 (75% of this CD is true disco) put out by the now gone Hot Productions...there you'll get a small taste of the REAL disco hits from the 1976 - 1980 era which kept everyone dancin and havin fun (with a few early 80s ones thrown in). Forget this pop culture cash in on what the radio mainstream called disco (and if this is what disco really was, I wouldnt blame em one bit for the whole disco sucks movement...but this IS NOT REAL DISCO!).

Like I said, I DO give em credit for putting a few tracks on here that actually were REAL club hits and not on every pop comp (Gibson Brothers "Cuba" is the main one that stands out). But don't take my word for it, seek out the 2 comps I mentioned above and hear for yourself!

This is fabulous as it brings me back to my disco queen days! I am the same slinky, sexy dancing goddess of the 80's! Well, it sure feels like it.
