another masterpiece October 30, 2008 Barto is the most polished and tasteful vertuoso of baroque lute. He has produced at least 8 cd's of Weiss' music--every one essential. I have been devoted to lute for at least 40 years and have heard no one comparing to Barto. I was privileged to hear him in concert. A joy to listen to. For those unfamiliar with Weiss, they are in for a marvelous discovery. Buy anything that man wrote and this man plays!
Weiss is great October 17, 2007 Weiss is great. OK not the most brilliant of the period but of sufficient class to have JC Bach, his chum, walk off with some of the thought and reissue it for harpsichord, without changing too much. Still as early music goes, almost an unending joy. Barto does a great job. Volume 1 in the seires is very good as well. If you can, find the CD of Sonate for 2 liuti, bliss.
SOOTHING June 12, 2006 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Lute music, for me, has always brought to my life some needed peace and it has always soothed my spirits no matter what was going on in my life at the time. This recording of Sylvius Weiss's Lute sonatas #15 and #48 played by Roberto Barto is no exception. Weiss was a contemporary of J.S. Bach. He, of course, is not nearly as well known as J.S.; however, he was obviously a great composer for the lute. The two sonatas in Volume Seven are splendid and beautiful works making full use of the lute's range. I particularly enjoyed #48 in F sharp Minor (a rather unusual key for the time this work was composed in) Roberto Barto certainly plays these works splendidly with deep feeling and with wonderful technique--giving a much needed repose to my soul indeed.
If you desire to hear some wonderful lute music that will offer some soothing sounds to your life that are played extremely well, buy this disc. The sound is great and by this being on the Naxos lable, it's at a great price-- a true bargain!
