Editorial Reviews:

Description
Maureen McGovern's recording career began in 1972 with her #1 chart-topping, Oscar-winning Gold Record "The Morning After," which earned her a Grammy nomination for "Best New Artist." She replicated this success two years later with another Oscar-winning Gold Record, "We May Never Love Like This Again," then made history in 1975 as the first singer to introduce two Oscar-nominated songs in the same year. To date, her career has spanned thirty-five years, including recordings, concerts, Broadway, films, television, radio and composing. With a voice that defies categorization ? from a jazzy, warm pop register to a crystalline coloratura ? she has earned a reputation for being one of America's most popular artists. Now her newest album, A LONG AND WINDING ROAD, finds Maureen reconnecting with the "Baby Boomer" songs that inspired her beginnings as a folk singer in the late ?60s. The album features an eclectic mix of classic and evocative tunes from such groundbreaking singer-songwriters as Joni Mitchell, Jimmy Webb, Paul Simon, Carole King, James Taylor, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Laura Nyro, whose songs comprise, as The New York Times has noted, "the second half of the Great American Songbook." It?s an introspective collection that?s at once rousing, powerful, and always deeply moving, featuring timeless songs that will speak to music-lovers of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars ...and she makes songs of the sixties and seventies sound great!   September 13, 2008
Maureen McGovern's newest, A long and Winding Road, is exactly what I would expect from this exceptional artist. I grew up in the seventies and actually found the music to be un-listenable. Now, along comes this CD and Ms. McGovern's vocals make them into glorious songs. Her clarity, diction, control, and range are there with the best of all-time female vocalists. One could not buy a better collection of 60's and 70's songs sung by one of the finest singers of our time. Obviously, I'm a fan.

4 out of 5 stars salute to 70s   August 18, 2008

Maureen has chosen the best possible tact to recognize these gems of the 60s and 70s. It would have been pointless and impossible to capture the original intense feelings of the original recordings by trying to record them as well orchstrated covers. This is the year 2008 and the most honnest way to salute these songs has been not to try and recreate them - rather to do it in a more detached manner - simple voice and minimal orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars I just want evrybody to know   July 19, 2008

Maureen is still the DIVA when it comes to singing all these type of genres she has been doing for the past 30+ years :) I was lucky to have front row seats at a concert she did in Irving Texas that she did before releasing this CD and it was all the songs .. who ever thought Racoon Song was a misfit, she was just having some lyrical fun with it, I think when she recorded this CD it was from one of the shows if I am not mistaken. still she does no wrong, still great as ever and always will be :)

4 out of 5 stars Good effort by McGovern   June 18, 2008

You have to start with the concept that whatever Maureen McGovern does, she does very well. And this CD is no exception. While I'm not crazy about some of the selections, I will say that this is the first time I've really listened to all the lyrics to "The Times They Are a-Changin'." I'm a generation removed from Bob Dylan and never understood his lyrics nor his popularity, so it's enjoyable to finally "get" these lyrics. McGovern's strong, commanding yet lyrical voice is such a pleasure to hear.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive talent and flawless performance   June 10, 2008

Folk singer Maureen McGovern is a consummate and accomplished performer whose career began in the late 60s and is still going strong today. Her latest album is "A Long and Winding Road" in which she showcases her impressive talent and flawless performance with an eclectic mix of eighteen songs that are reflective, melodic, and superlative examples of American popular culture as presented in the folk tradition of the last forty years. The pieces comprising this simply outstanding and highly recommended album include All I Want/America; The Times They area-Cahngin'; The Circle Game; The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feeling Groovy); Cowboy; The Coming of the roads; Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?; Shed a Little Light/Carry It On/ The Fiddle and the Drum; Fire and Rain; Rocky Raccoon; Let It Be; By the Time I Get to Phoenix; MacArthur Park; The Moon's A Harsh Mistress; And When I Die; Imagine; and the title piece, The Long and Winding Road.
