Album Description The landmark musical's first-ever Broadway revival! The curtain rang down on Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific in 1954 after five years of extraordinary acclaim and countless awards including nine Tonys and a Pulitzer. Based on James Michener's Pulitzer Prize winning book Tales of the South Pacific, the musical is set on a tropical island during World War II and tells the sweeping romantic story of two couples - U.S. Navy nurse Nellie Forbush and French plantation owner Emile de Becque and Marine Joe Cable and a young local native girl Liat - and how their happiness is threatened by the realities of the war and by their own prejudices. Considered by many the finest musical ever written, the score's songs include such musical theater classics as "Some Enchanted Evening," "Younger Than Springtime," "Bali Ha'i," "There is Nothin' Like a Dame" and "A Wonderful Guy."

Great Album -- and the Show Is Even Better! July 4, 2008 I bought this with a certain amount of foreboding, because of the recent Reba McIntyre/Brian Stokes Mitchell recording where Reba decided to change Hammerstein's "Wonderful Guy" lyrics. But WOW! This is the only reading of the score that comes close to the 1949 original. The Rodgers & Hammerstein score is a hit parade unto itself, and it positively gleams here. The singers are excellent and the Robert Russell Bennett orchestrations bring back a sound Broadway hasn't heard in years, one which puts the present anemic-sized pit bands to shame. Two more notes: (1) Mary Martin may not have been a raving beauty if photos from the era are to be believed, but she was one of those stars who could light up a stage just by walking onto it. Gertrude Lawrence was another who could do the same. So let's stop insulting her. On the album, she is luminous. (2) When I saw the actual production onstage, it was even better than the album. It was a modern production that didn't try to "revisal" the show into something reflecting the director's "vision." Bartlett Sher brought out new aspects of the show as written. That's why it's such a big hit; Mr. Sher had faith in the show. It's called trusting Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein 2nd.
A simple comment about a great show! July 3, 2008 I saw the show and loved it ....clear crisp...vibarant..... but the recording was flat....no depth...were the mics on mono for the orchestra...a poor recordin for an awsome production. If you saw the show your wont be able to resist this mediocre recording.
a gem! July 3, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The quality of this recording is head and shoulders above earlier South Pacific recordings. This is a superb cast and orchestra, and the sound quality is fabulous.
South Pacific New Broadway Cast Recording July 1, 2008 This is a good recording of South Pacific, which is one of my favorite musicals. I was sort of disappointed because this is not as good or complete as other recent South Pacific recordings, which contain more dialog and longer renditions of some songs. Usually newer recordings seem to be different than the other available recordings like the Royal National Theatre or JAY Productions recordings were. They included some songs not found on other recordings. When listening to it I felt like it was no different than any of the others. If you're looking for something different, don't buy it. However, if you like South Pacific you're bound to like it anyway.
updated classic June 30, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
South Pacific has some of the most beautiful music in the history of our theater. This recording is a smart rendition - updated in subtle ways to highlight the cross-cultural understandings and alienation of war. The New York Times says South Pacific is worthy of great literature. This recording is a good start in 'reading' a classic!
