Based on a Serbo-Croation story, this film by Alan Wade is set in rural Appalachia and stars Christian Slater as a suicidal stranger whose car breaks down on a long pilgrimage to the ocean. The locals greet him with suspicion, but when they find out that he has death on his mind, he becomes a local celebrity, treated with kindness and made a confidante of many who have troubles to share. The irony is that this rise in esteem is exactly the antidote to his self-destructive urges--but will these good people understand if he changes his mind? Wade's low-key approach is a good choice for this character-driven story, but his portrayal of rural types is a bit tainted by the cliches of TV's Northern Exposure and Doc Hollywood, stories where small-town folk are automatically eccentric. Still, this is a pleasant enough film about a highly unusual subject. --Tom Keogh

1 out of 5 stars simplistic thief of your time and money   April 19, 2005

Remember reading Shirley Jackson in high school?
Remember reading and Carson McCuller's or watching a movie adaption of her work?
Hold these in your mind.
Now take away insight, originality, psychological resonance, and acting ability and you have Julian Po.

5 out of 5 stars Christian Slater   June 28, 2004

I never "got" Christian Slater or his presence, purpose, or whatever has made him such an in demand and popular actor until I saw this movie playing on sunday afternoon TV matinee. I look forward to JULIAN PO being reissued on dvd because this is a great movie and CHRISTIAN gives an outstanding lead performance. God knows I have several dvd movies with him in them even though he is not their major star attraction, but, till JULIAN PO, I just never understood Christian's artistry as an actor. NOW I KNOW!

5 out of 5 stars the intelligent viewer's spoof   March 2, 2004

I've watched this film several times, usually showing it to friends for their first time. Nobody likes the ending, and yet, it's the perfect ending for this movie. You laugh, your eyes moisten, you go through this range of emotions, and human nature is revealed in both positive and negative aspects to a point of making the viewer uncomfortable, then you are snapped to the next vignette. Very well done. I just wish there was a sequel.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent film... excellent story   February 9, 2004

The story and characters were perfect. It captures the essence of a small town and the irony of this young man facing suicide only to change his mind again only to have forces set in motion take control. It is a philosophical echo of our own insecurities and the fact that many of us tend not to live life at its fullest. It had the feel and sensibilities of a live play - would be great on as an off broadway production. Would like to see this in a DVD edition.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderfully different movie!   March 17, 2002
I think this movie is a masterpiece. I love the irony and its philosophy of life...life is short...live it to the fullest before it's too late! And I love the juxtaposition of that with the sense of the futility of life, plus the juxtaposition of Julian's earlier anonymous life where no one cared or loved him with the ironic love and caring he finds in this small town where he's come to kill himself. Then there's the finally irony of finding himself right before...well, I don't want to spoil the plot for you. See for yourself.

Watching it takes me through a range of emotions from laughter to tears to great introspection into the meaninig of life. I couldn't ask for more in a movie. And I thought Christian Slater played the part perfectly.

A great, off-beat movie that's a real hidden gem. Not as depressing as it might sound.
