Product Description
Performed with a who's-who of East Coast session aces before a record-setting crowd of half a million fans The Concert in Central Park finds its stars just shy of their 40th birthdays and very much in their primes their voices sweet and pure and their playing relaxed perfectly in tune and in synch. The show features a mix of S&G and solo Simon tunes including all the songs that appear on the CD with the addition of a reprise of "Late in the Evening" and the first live performance of Simon's "The Late Great Johnny Ace." What started as a suggestion for Paul Simon to play a concert in New York's Central Park blossomed, on September 19, 1981, as a full-blown Simon and Garfunkel reunion after an 11-year hiatus, and now proves a priceless snapshot of two of America's greatest folk-rock performers. (It's also the rightful bookend to Simon and Garfunkel's acoustic Live from New York City, 1967.)

Performed with a who's-who of East Coast session aces before a record-setting crowd of half a million fans, The Concert in Central Park finds its stars just shy of their 40th birthdays and very much in their primes, their voices sweet and pure and their playing relaxed, perfectly in tune and in synch. The show features a mix of S&G and solo Simon tunes, including all the songs that appear on the CD, with the addition of a reprise of "Late in the Evening" and the first live performance of Simon's "The Late Great Johnny Ace." This is classic material from start to finish, 87 minutes of unmitigated beauty. --Michael Mikesell

2 out of 5 stars An off night for the boys   October 13, 2008
I'll cut to the chase...

As a lifelong Simon & Garfunkel fan...lets be honest. The arrangements and performances of the Central park concert were pretty lame. After seeing it I figured that perhaps they were simply meant to stay in the studio..

Then.....I reluctantly saw "Old Friends". The arrangements were the best I had heard...some surpassing the original studio versions. Much more energy to the music.....far superior to the bland concert in Central Park.

Don't waste you money on this one....unless you need something for your insomnia.

3 out of 5 stars Un impresionante concierto.

2 out of 5 stars LIve, but sound quality dead   September 18, 2008
The problem is that the sound quality is terrible, not just bad. For a much better listening experience, consider "Simon & Garfunkel - Old Friends, Live on Stage (2004)" ( http://www.amazon.com/Simon-Garfunkel-Friends-Live-Stage/dp/B000679NLO/ ).

I own both and have considered trading this central park concert disc in to the local music store for the $[...] credit as used. I love Paul's music and and Art's voice, and the "old friends - live" is played here every few weeks or so - "concert in central park", not.

4 out of 5 stars This is a Title for my review   September 5, 2008
That was a good night. Can't believe it was so long ago as it was because I remember it like it was yesterday. Very well captured on this video, and the performance speaks for itself. Great way to remember it if you were there and great way to experience it if you were not.

5 out of 5 stars Simon and Garfunkel, Concert in Central Park   July 16, 2008
Simon and Garfunkel's Concert in Central Park was very good. It brought back a lot of memories and great music. This was about 1981, so they were still young and their voices sounded great. The musicians backing them up were very good. So, it was good video and good sound. They are not too crazy about one another, as many band members grow tired of being around one another for years. But, they took care of the business at hand and produced a fine concert with a tremendous crowd attending the outdoor event.
