Amazon.com Katherine Heigl is delightful as Jane, a self-effacing Gal Friday so addicted to organizing weddings in her off time, that 27 Dresses opens with her character juggling two nuptials on the same night. A perpetual bridesmaid, Jane's hobby is discovered by a matrimony reporter named Kevin (James Marsden), who hides a romantic side behind his wall of cynicism. While Kevin gradually develops feelings for Jane, the latter's superficial sister, Tess (Malin Akerman), pursues George (Edward Burns), Jane's boss and the object of her love. This romantic circle could go on forever, except that Jane is unexpectedly moved by Kevin despite her general irritation with him and without knowing that he's on the verge of sandbagging her with a ridiculing article in his newspaper. The situation is absurd, but the emotions are not. Heigl is very good, rooted in a long tradition of comely comediennes playing characters who fly under the radar of life. She makes Jane's pain palpable and conveys her character's inability to say no without making her look unappealing or weak. Marsden perfectly captures the part of a rumpled, underdressed writer with repressed passions, Akerman is as convincingly shrewish here as she was in The Heartbreak Kid, and Burns is fine as one of those guys so busy saving the world he barely pays attention to the people in his life. The script by Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada) is fun if predictable, and Anne Fletcher's direction is vibrant. --Tom Keogh

Marsdeigl! July 9, 2008 27 Dresses is a cute little movie about, yes, romance and comedy. While not perfect, it is a pretty good movie. I judge movies on whether I'll ever want to watch them again, and I would see 27 Dresses a few more times. Katherine Heigl is good at playing her title role, and James Marsden does light up the screen as the love interest, but... there is some heart missing. It's the cinematic equivalent of a Hershey's bar- you know it's not as good as, say, Dove chocolate, but you'll still eat it because it tastes pretty good and you're hungry.
27 Dresses July 8, 2008 No doubt that this young lady has a future! She literally lit up the screen. Using as little over acting as possible. The ending shows that you may not get what you thought you wanted, but you can get something better!
Very sweet and, dare I say it, "cute". July 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I knew the ending right from the start (who wouldn't figure that out?), but I had to watch it. James Marsden was in it, hello! That's the first reason, but also because I'm a sappy romantic who loves chick flicks!
I didn't like Katherine Heigl that much before she started doing movies, but she is growing on me with each new film. Her character in this is very admirable for doing all she does for friends and not saying "no" to people. She's a hero at times, really. And when the hero gets trampled, of course you want to see her lifted up and given the respect and happy ending with the perfect wedding she deserves. Oh, and I loved her adorable apartment!
Good, good!
Great movie! July 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was a little surprised by this movie. Like most romantic comedies, it had the usual scant plot and comedic dilemmas. In this case, though, the substantial charm of the two leads--Heigl and Marsden--added a great deal more. Heigl's character is addicted to weddings and is portrayed as sort of an offbeat character as a result. What the wedding obsession really does is keep her from living her own life; she is always helping everyone else with their weddings and never moving forward toward her own. Add to that an unrequited crush on her boss, and you have someone who is never going to have a real life unless something happens to change things. That something is an unlikely attraction to Marsden's character--unlikely because he appears to hold views that are opposite to hers, not because he happens to be outrageously handsome, funny, and smart. While some reviewers have panned the movie because they see Heigl as pathetic in it, the fact is that everyone has some areas in their life where they are not everything they should be. It's the exaggeration of that that makes this movie funny and endearing. Most of us don't have a closet full of old bridesmaid dresses holding us back, but we may be holding onto other things that take the place of a real life. Heigl and Marsden were both winsome and adorable in this movie, and although it was a typical "chick flick," it was not sappy or boring. There was an interesting edge to both characters that gave the movie some life and spontaneity. I recommend it as an enjoyable viewing experience. Would love to see both actors in another movie again soon.
