One problem after another until... AAAGH! November 25, 2008 The HP Photosmart D7160 is a great printer -- "on paper". I bought the printer primarily based on it's features and the photo quality was also impressive. Unfortunately the more mundane aspects of the printer caused problem after problem until I literally had a fit and threw it in the trash. This negative review is now my attempt to calm down.
First problem I had with this printer: It would frequently pause between print jobs and spend over a minute recalibrating. The more cynical might note that this also wasted a LOT of ink.
Second problem: The printer would sometimes insist on using the photo tray for 'regular' paper jobs, or vice versa. It had nothing to do with the print-driver settings, they were correct. When the printer would start to do this the only solution was to cycle power.
Third problem: After successfully using the printer for about a year (though probably less) to print my monthly bills from Quicken, it spontaneously decided that my blank checks were 'upside-down' and refused to print on them until I turned them right-side up. Apparently, it was scanning the backside of the paper and 'seeing' the check endorsement box. But why was this suddenly a problem after so many months of ignoring it?
At this point I realized there might not be any solution to the printer's problems and I was overwhelmed at the thought of how many HOURS UPON HOURS I had wasted trying to make the printer work properly, and on basic print-outs, too. So I lost it and literally trashed the 'still working' printer. Actually, this is now the 2nd HP inkjet (in as many years) to overwhelm me with it's fickleness. And don't even get me started on their scanners which unequivocally suck; get a Fujitsu ! I've made a minor hobby out of telling my co-workers horror stories about HP scanners.
Did I mention? In addition to the occasional temper tantrum I also have 20 years experience as a Senior IT Manager, so I am *not* easily defeated by computers or anything else technical.
Hopefully this review will save someone else from making the same mistake I made -- confusing the quality of HP's laserjet printers with the inconsistent and extremely frustrating POOR quality of their inkjets (and scanners).
HP Photosmart D7160 Printer October 12, 2008 Great low cost printer for average home user. Setup was easy and price of replacement cartridges are reasonable. Does a decent job on photos but certainly not as good as higher end models so if you print an occasional photo and lots of text, it is a good deal.
Like it! September 21, 2008 This is a really good printer for my needs. I only use it a few times a week. The color is excellent. I'm looking forward to printing off more pictures.
I've been pleased. September 1, 2008 I've had this printer for over a year and have been very pleased with it. I admit, if I had read some of the reviews on here, I might not have purchased it. I have a Mac and had NO installation problems--just followed the directions and was up and running. I am NOT running wireless.
This is my only printer, so I use it for documents and photos. I'm picky about document quality and have not been disappointed. The photos are excellent quality. Some appear slightly darker than what appears on the screen.
I have not used the edit button on the printer. I use the software that came with the printer. It's a bit slow, but works fine. Having the different ports for the different types of memory cards is a big plus. I can load photos to my desktop from the printer easily.
I haven't had a big problem with jamming--once or twice that were easily fixed. It is a bit noisy at times, but for the price, I can live with that!
HP - What Happened to Quality? April 28, 2008 I ordered this printer as a GoldBox item for Christmas. Received it and spent weeks trying to get it installed. Finally, after spending an additonal $50 for tech support through Office Max, it is up and running. The photos are nothing to brag about but not awful either. The ink is somewhat blotchy and looks like it was embossed on the photo paper. Not smooth like I would expect. Normal copies are OK, but again not great. So far, I haven't had a problem with the ink cartridges running out so that's a good thing. All in all, I wish I had had another $100 to buy a better model.
