Amazon.com Product Description Boasting a sleek and shiny black-and-silver chassis, the HP Pavilion A6000N desktop PC comes loaded with the all tools you need to easily create, manage, share, and enjoy your digital photos, home videos, movies, and music. You can easily burn your home video productions to DVD for friends and family with the dual-layer, multi-format DVD/CD burner, which enables you to store up to 8.5 GB of data on a DL disc and provides a super-fast 16x DVD+R/-R write speed. It also includes LightScribe technology for personalized silkscreen-quality, laser-etched CD/DVD labels created right in the drive. This desktop is powered by the 2.2 GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ dual-core processor, which increases the efficiency and speed of the PC while running multiple programs and the latest multi-threaded software. Store more music, videos, and data on the roomy 250 GB Serial ATA hard drive, which offers fast transfer rates. It also comes loaded with 1 GB of RAM (which can be bumped up to a very generous 8 GB), an integrated Nvidia GeForce 6150 video/graphics card with 128 MB of dedicated video RAM, a wide variety of connection ports on both the front and rear of the box, and a 15-in-1 memory card reader that's compatible with today's most popular digital camera formats. It comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures. The Basics - Processor: AMD's Athlon 64 X2 4200+ dual-core processor is built for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, which will require a processor with significant power. It outperforms the highest-performing AMD Athlon 64 4000+ single-core processor on multi-tasking benchmarks by up to 30 percent. Dual-core technology is like having two processors working together, each one taking care of different applications, so power-users actually experience greater performance when multiple applications are running. Digital media enthusiasts will appreciate the enhancements while simultaneously working in high-definition video and photo editing and audio mixing programs. It includes such AMD features as HyperTransport Technology (which increases the communication between integrated circuits) and Enhanced Virus Protection.
This 2.2 GHz processor offers a system bus with speeds up to a blazing 2000 MHz and each core offers a 512 KB L2 cache--for a 1 MB total. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) - Hard Drive: The extra-large 250 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
- Memory: The 1 GB of installed RAM (PC4200, 2 x 512 MB, 533 MHz) is a fine start, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and gaming software. This desktop has a 8 GB maximum RAM capacity (8 x 1 GB), perfect for high-def video and 3-D gaming.
- DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R DL Write Once, 16x DVD+R, 8x DVD+RW, 16x DVD-R, 6x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, 40x CD-R, 32x CD-RW write speeds and 40x CD-ROM, and 16x DVD-ROM read speeds.
This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art. - Keyboard & Mouse: It comes with an HP multimedia keyboard and scroller mouse (both with PS/2 connections).
Video & Audio This desktop features an integrated Nvidia GeForce 6150 SE graphics/video card with 128 MB of dedicated graphics memory. Windows Vista can also allocate up to 319 MB of total graphics memory from the system memory. It features NVidia's PureVideo technology--which provides great picture clarity, smooth video, accurate color, and precise image scaling for video content--and full support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 for stunningly realistic cinematic effects for all DirectX-compatible applications. It also offers an integrated audio card that can produce high definition surround sound configurable to 8 speakers. Networking, Connectivity & Expansion For expansion, this desktop has two PCI slots (two available), one PCI Express x1 slot (available), one PCI Express x16 slot (available), two 5.25-inch bays (one available), and three 3.5-inch bays (two available). It comes with a built-in floppy drive and the following external connectors: - 7 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players (3 in front, 4 in rear)
- 2 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals (1 in front, 1 in rear)
- 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice

Very quiet, but not enough memory. November 3, 2007 I felt that this machine was VERY slow until I put in a total of 3gigs of memory---now it works as fast as XP. The desktop memory meter says I'm at 50% memory usage, so 2 gigs would have probably been enough.
As stated in some of the other reviews, with the on/off button on the top edge of the front panel it is too easy to turn the machine off while moving or tilting the case. Also, it would have been nice if HP would have included a disk copy of Vista.
3 USB ports on the front and also firewire. The built in card reader on the front is also very nice. A very quiet machine and it looks good. I'm not a gamer so the graphics look fine to me, but my kids say my $550 laptop has a better graphics card than this.
Overall, with the increased memory, I'm quite happy with this machine.
Awesome for the Price July 3, 2007 I am very satisfied with this product. You cannot get a better deal for the money. I am even happy with the Vista operating system. I think that most of the negative comments regarding the Vista operating system are an over-reaction from those unwilling or unable to take the time to learn the nuances of Vista. Although I do agree that the memory needs to be upgraded to take full advantage of Vista. However, that upgrade was not a big expense around $100 to add 2 MB of memory.
Most Bang For My Buck June 28, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have been using the HP a6000n for about one month and am completely satisfied with my purchase. I use my home system for routine office applications, Websurfing, e-mail, and the like, and this HP model more than fills the bill. My previous computer was a six-year-old Sony Vaio AMD Duron model with Windows ME, which had become antiquated by computing standards. I love Sony for the quality of their design and production, but they seem to have narrowed the focus of their desktop line to costly high-end multimedia systems and completely forsaken the value-priced user.
Back to HP, I was originally going to purchase the a6130n for the 2GB of memory and slightly faster processor, but when Amazon listed the a6000n at 500 bucks delivered (after rebates), I couldn't pass it up. (Kudos to Amazon for attractive pricing and their usual efficient order fulfillment.) After spending just 40 bucks for another 1GB of memory (Corsair VS1GBKIT533D2), I think I got the most bang for my buck. Note that 1GB is just barely adequate to run Vista, but the most memory that 32-bit Vista can use is a little over 3GB, so I would advise that you not overspend here. This computer has four memory slots and comes with two 512MB sticks; I recommend that you simply add a pair of value-line 512MB or 1GB sticks to the existing array and you shouldn't have to shell out over 100 bucks in the process.
I have never been a fan of Windows, but the resource-hogging Vista, in my opinion, with all its drawbacks is still lightyears ahead of ME in speed, efficiency and ease of use. Of course, there are the usual compatibility problems with pre-existing programs, but most of these issues seem to have work-arounds. Vista even has a feature that will attempt to adapt your older apps to the new OS; I used it to load my ancient Wordperfect 9 program, which appears to be running like a charm. (Yes, Virginia, WP9 runs on Vista!)
In sum, this model seems to offer great value. If you're in the market for a new home computer, I highly recommend that you compare the features of the HP a6000n and its brethren models, such as the a6110n and a6130n, before buying any other computer.
It's OK June 27, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's OK for a home PC. So far I haven't had any issues. I'm being cautious, because I already had one HP "lemon". Ask me in a year.
Good PC for the Price June 17, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got this PC about a month ago and it is the best I've ever had. I usually get low-end computers and this one is the king of them all. I paid a little over $500 for it and just connected it to my old monitor. This system is ready to use straight out of the box. Even with Windows Vista, it still moves pretty quickly. This PC comes pre-loaded with 1 GB of RAM (2 512 KB sticks) but has four slots. Just for kicks I ordered four 1 GB sticks even though the computer is already pretty quick without it. Also, the seven USB ports are a definite plus. The three USB ports in the front have a cover you can flip to protect the ports while they are not in use. Having the PCI and PCI-e ports in this system was beneficial to me becuase I had a PCI sound card and all of the good video cards these days are PCI-e so this comp allows for the use of both.
Depending on what you are trying to do, this is a quality computer. If you are just planning on using it for daily use then you will more than get your money worth. I will say that I tried to run City of Heroes with the integrated GeForce 6150 that comes with the system and it would not work. I couldn't even see the cursor on my game until I got more RAM. This is a good computer to build on if you are a gamer. The dual processors are more than adequate as long as you don't mind adding a few extra dollars for a new video card and RAM. I only play City of Heroes and City of Villains so I went and got the GeForce 7300 GT from XFX and a 350 watt power supply (the one that comes with the computer is only 300). Add that two the for sticks of RAM I got and a sound card that I took from my old computer. Getting this comp gamer ready cost me between $250 and $300 bucks. If you don't mind doing a little bit of work, you can have a pretty good gaming system for well under $1000.
