| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Product Description Affordably priced yet nicely loaded, the HP Pavilion a1000n is a great desktop PC for the whole family. The speedy 2.93 GHz Intel Celeron D processor will ably handle a wide range of software, from spreadsheets to multimedia. It also features an 80 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM (expandable to 2 GB), separate DVD-ROM and CD-RW drives, a handy multiformat memory card reader, and a wealth of preinstalled software including HP's Image Zone Plus for managing and editing your digital photo collection. The Basics - Hard Drive: The 80 GB hard drive (7200 RPM) is average in size when compared to other budget-minded desktop PCs. It will provide ample storage space for your family digital photos as well as a large digital audio library--but it's not quite enough for editing digital video from camcorders.
- Processor: The Intel Celeron D 340 processor might not be as sexy as a Pentium, but it still gets your work done speedily enough. It has a 2.93 GHz speed--near the top of this processor's range as of June 2005--with a decently fast 533 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and 256K L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)
- Memory: The 512 MB of installed RAM (PC2700, 333 MHz) is a good start, but you'll want to take advantage of the roomy 2 GB of total RAM capacity (2 x 1 GB) for such multimedia needs as video editing and immersive 3D gaming.
- CD/DVD Drive: This desktop includes two optical drives: a 16x DVD-ROM drive (for watching movies) and a CD-RW drive with 48x read/write and 32x rewrite speeds.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This desktop comes with an HP multimedia keyboard and scroller mouse (both with PS/2 connections).
Screen, Graphics and Sound The integrated Intel Extreme Graphics video/graphics card (with 64 MB of shared video memory) is adequate for streaming Internet video, but won't be enough for today's demanding immersive 3D games. It also features an integrated audio card and headphone, microphone, and line-in jacks. Connectivity and Expansion Slots The a1000n has three PCI expansion slots (two available), two external 5.25-inch drive bays (occupied), one internal 3.5-inch drive bay (occupied), two external 3.5-inch drive bay (one available), and the following external ports: - 5 USB 2.0 ports (4 in rear, 1 in front) for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
- 2 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link; 1 front and 1 back) ports for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
- 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
- 1 parallel port
- 1 serial port
- Line-in, line-out, headphone, and microphone connections
- 1 VGA monitor port
- 9-in-1 media card reader on the front, compatible with CompactFlash (Type I and II), MicroDrive, SmartMedia, Memory Stick/Memory Stick Pro, MultiMedia Card, Secure Digital, and XD Picture Card
It includes an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems). Preloaded System and Software This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 operating system with Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents), Norton Internet Security 2005 (with 60 days of complimentary updates), Microsoft Money 2005, Sonic RecordNow, Apple iTunes, and MSN Encarta Plus. The included HP Image Zone Plus photo and imaging software makes it easy to organize, edit, share, print, protect, and store your photos and video clips. Organize and find your photos easily by timeline, keywords, and/or location using the unique photo-globe mapping tool. Remove red eye and fix other common problems. Share your photos quickly via e-mails that include thumbnails with links to the full-sized images--without downloading time-consuming attachments. Dimensions and Weight This desktop measures 7.17 x 15 x 17 (WxHxD) and weighs approximately 24 pounds. What's in the Box This package contains the HP Pavilion a1000n desktop PC, keyboard, mouse, and power cord. It's backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor, one-year of technical telephone service, and 90 days of software application support.

Good value July 19, 2005 Great PC for internet, music, and digital photography. I would have preferred Microsoft Office to Works, but otherwise a good package.
Worth every penny July 9, 2005 For this price and rebate, there is no way you're going to get this much hardware and quality together. By far the best deal I found out there and as of yet, there hasn't been a single problem with it. It works perfectly fine - it's fast, loads of memory, keyboard funtions are actually useful - it's great.
Amazing, Quiet, Cheap PC June 8, 2005 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This PC is amazing. It has all you can want for the money. Like in the previous review, I also think it is annoying that they put the three big ass stickers on the front of the computer. I got this PC, the HP vs15 flat panel monitor and a HP Deskjet 3845 printer for $489.99 at my local Best Buy. This computer is extremely quiet. You will not regret this purchase!
Good basic e-mail machine with 2 major annoyances May 12, 2005 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Annoyances first - 2 large 2" X 2" stickers on the front of the case that won't peel off easily. It takes a lot of work and "Goo Gone" to get them off. - 2 screws holding the hard drive in are almost inaccessible. You need a special philips screwdriver with a right angle neck that is less than one inch long and a mirror and flashlight to get to them.
I gave the machine only 3 stars because it is a 2.93 GHz processor that doesn't seem any faster than my old HP 7955 1.5GHz machine. I've had the machine 2 weeks now.
There is no floppy drive, but $35 and a little time will solve this problem if you need it.
Multi-media slots on the front are nice.
Power supply and CPU fans are VERY quiet. I even checked to insure they were running.
