1 out of 5 stars Severely Flawed   August 3, 2008
I recently purchased one of these things, and sent it back the next day. As others have mentioned, there is a lot of bait and switch in the software offering. Full MIONET functionality requires what is now a $79/year subscription, and the backup software is a trial version. That aside, my experience was as follows:

The drive would only stay visible on my network for about four hours, then it disappeared to both my PC and my laptop. The power button didn't work at all. I had to unplug the thing to get it to reboot. After restart, it would be visible for about another four hours, then it disappeared again.

I've used Western Digital products for more than 20 years, and this was my only dissapointment. It's on its way back to the dealer.

1 out of 5 stars Slow, hot, dead, unfixable   June 14, 2008
This device is slow, runs hot, and no way to fix it when it breaks down. On top of that, my hard drive failed after about a year of occasional use.
Occasionally it would lock up and I'd have to restart it. Since it ran hot, I tried to remember to shut it off when I wasn't using it, but I would often forget.
I'm a computer nerd, so I usually just repair, reformat and retask things when they break, but the parts and software on the MBWE are cheap and proprietary. I did the research when it died and decided it just wasn't worth fixing.
I've been much happier with Lacie drives, although I wouldn't recommend their ethernet drives either. I've switched to a usb drive until the ethernet storage improves. Read the reviews, there are a lot of poorly designed drives on the market right now.

1 out of 5 stars Do not Buy this drive, Simply too many Flaws!!!!   June 7, 2008
This hard drive is the worst I have ever dealt with...period. It would be worth about, of wait, it is not worth ANYTHING. I work an hour form where I live and thought that the idea of a network drive would be great. I would be able to download any files I need form my home when I'm at work or on the road. Sounds wonderful in theory, but as has been stated, it simply does not work in practice.

Let me go over the problems I have had with this hard drive:

1-You must install Mio-net on all computers that you want to connect to this drive. Mio-net is owned by Western Digital and does not seem to have ANY support at all!! 99% of the time, Mio-net on my laptop tells me that the hard drive `failed mount'. What this means is that you cannot do anything with your computer. Western Digital's support page states that this is due to my computers firewall. I formatted my firewall to allow access and the same problem comes up. Another call to support says that `It must be your firewall'. I disabled my firewall completely and guess what...Failed Mount!!! And this is from a computer connected to my home network, so you can only guess the problems I have had on the road.

2-when I can get it to work, it is SLOW. On a USB 2.0, it takes hours to transfer a few gigs of data. This is simply unacceptable on a 500 gig hard drive. Also, when I can get it to connect, see #1 above, it takes even longer to upload anything and have the time it times out before I can get the file, even 25kb Word files!!! What is the point of a network drive that is nothing more which a very poor mass storage system?

3-During the hours that it takes for files to transfer to this hard drive; do not plan on doing anything on-line. As this is a network drive, it uses your network to transfer files. This means that it sucks your bandwidth and makes it impossible to use the internet while the files are transferred. So I suggest transferring it ay night when you are not planning to use your internet connection.

4-Don't put anything important on this drive as I have had to send two of them back to Western Digital. The on off button broke on the first one, so it would not turn on at all. The second one would power up the drive but never turn on fully. So totally worthless. Of course both of these problems occurred after I have transferred data to these drives. So hours down the drain, as well as no chance to erase and reformat before these drives get sent to God only knows where!!!

If I could give these drives a ZERO out of FIVE, I would, but all I can say is buyer beware and do not make the mistake I made. If you need hard drives please look elsewhere.

1 out of 5 stars Piece of JUNK   May 25, 2008
1 out of 2 found this review helpful

I bought this drive and the USB interface to the PC started failing within 6 months. ( I searched on line and found this is a very common failure with this drive).
I sent it back via RMA, and I had the new one less than 24 before it too started failing. DONT BUY THIS Piece of JUNK!.

1 out of 5 stars horrible overheating problem   May 15, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I'm not that against Mionet, I won't mind if I can't share some particular files, as long as it WORKS, which unfortunately didn't for the most of time.
I initially put it into my enclosed AV rack, and frequently found it started to flash the infamous "double blue ring" on its own after I waked up in the morning, which made it completely unusable.
I did some search, found lots of complain on the similar issue and realized it's due to the overheating problem, I then moved it out of my rack and put on the top of a table, it got slightly better but after about an hour the flash ring came back again.
I'm curious to know, is there any fix to this problem? is it possible to add a venting fan?
