| | | It's powered by the 1.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo ULV (Ultra-Low Voltage) U7600 processor, which offers an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance as well as low power consumption for longer battery life. It includes Intel's 4965 AGN wireless LAN, which will connect to draft 802.11n routers and offers compatibility with 802.11a/b/g networks as well. Enjoy Bluetooth wireless connectivity to a variety of peripherals, including wireless stereo headphones (via the embedded A2DP profile). With the integrated wireless WAN, you can access the national Sprint Mobile Broadband service (subscription required) to extend your wireless coverage beyond LAN access networks and hotspots, giving you the freedom to go farther, do more, and stay connected. Communicate with pals all around with world via VoIP calling and video conferencing using the built-in microphone and Motion Eye camera (with zoom function). Other features include a 120 GB hard drive, 2 GB of installed RAM (maximum capacity), dual-layer DVD burner, Gigabit Ethernet, both Memory Stick and SD memory stick readers, pre-installed Sony multimedia software, and Microsoft Windows Vista Business (SP1) operating system. This Sony notebook is Energy Star 4.0 certified, and has received a Silver EPEAT designation for meeting standards to help reduce its environmental impact. Additionally, it is RoHS-compliant, effectively reducing the environmental impact by restricting the use of lead, mercury and certain other hazardous substances. Security Enhancements Sony's VAIO SR notebooks take security seriously, employing a biometric fingerprint sensor and proprietary hard disk drive protection software to ensure your data is protected from unauthorized use as well as accidental damage. It also stores passwords to secure web sites you visit, so authentication and access are quick and easy--you only need your fingerprint. It also includes an integrated Trusted Platform Module (TPM) TCG Ver.1.2 compliant chip that enhances security by allowing you to control access on a specific client/user basis. The Basics - Processor: The Ultra Low Voltage Intel Core 2 Duo U7600 processor offers a 1.2 GHz speed paired with a fast 533 MHz front-side bus and large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) This ULV processor is designed for high performance and low power consumption--perfect for advanced multi-tasking, and 4 to 8.5 hours of standard battery life on a single charge. And like all Core 2 Duo chips, this processor supports 64-bit operating systems and software.
- Hard Drive: The 120 GB UltraATA hard drive (4200 RPM) is a bit larger than you'll find in comparable ultra-light notebooks. It offers more than enough capacity for storing documents and productivity software for road warriors. You'll also be able to store a good-sized digital audio library.
The G-Sensor Shock Protection feature makes your data even less vulnerable to loss or damage. When the built-in 3D acceleration sensor detects a risky movement like being dropped, the HDD-head will lock up to secure its position and protect the disc from scratching. An intelligent algorithm, unique to VAIO PCs, judges whether or not a movement is risky, activating disk drive protection only when your hardware is at risk. - Memory: This laptop has two memory slots and comes loaded with 2 GB of DDR SDRAM (PC4200, 533 MHz DDR RAM; 2 x 1024 MB), which maximizes the capacity of this PC.
- DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 4x for DVD+R DL, 4x for DVD-R DL, 8x for both single layer DVDR, 8x for single layer DVD+RW, 6x for single layer DVD-RW, 5x for DVD-RAM, and 24x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 82-key keyboard (1.7mm stroke and 17mm pitch) and electro-static two-button touchpad. Designed for ease of use and a smart, sophisticated look, the individual keys are slightly raised, producing a user-friendly touch and feel to the keyboard that creates an improved typing experience. In addition, an extra support layer has been added below the bezel to increase the structural integrity of the keyboard and add stability to the keys, giving them an unwavering up-down motion and making for quieter typing.
Screen, Video & Audio The 11.1-inch XBRITE-HiColor LCD with white LED backlight has a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels--perfect for watching movies in their intended 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. Sony's innovative backlight technology offers lower power consumption for improved battery life and provides incredibly high brightness levels, amplifying colors and creating clear, crisp pictures that truly "pop" off the LCD. The result: an amazing 72 percent color saturation for deeper blacks, brighter whites, true-to-life color and razor-sharp detail. And, with the anti-reflective coating to minimize reflection while providing a wide viewing angle, you'll enjoy a beautifully clear image from almost any angle. Sony's Smart Display Sensor feature instantly adjusts resolution when you connect to a display or projector. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, which uses Intel Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT) and provides up to 256 MB of total graphics memory from the system memory. Audio is powered by Intel's High Definition Audio integrated chip. Networking, Connectivity & Expansion Go beyond LAN networks and find the internet virtually anywhere with integrated Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) technology via optional Sprint Mobile Broadband EV-DO service (software included, subscription required)--helping you to keep connected without having to hunt for a Wi-Fi coffee shop. Sony's SmartWi technology seamlessly integrates your wireless Wide Area Network (WAN), office/home Wi-Fi LAN, and Bluetooth options, enabling you to toggle among your wireless connectivity options depending on your surroundings. Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated Intel Wireless Wi-Fi Link 4965 AGN LAN chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and wi-fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). You also get super-fast wired connectivity, with a Gigabit Ethernet port (10/100/1000). With the Bluetooth connectivity, you can communicate and synchronize with Bluetooth-enabled peripherals such as PDAs and cell phones as well as enjoy wireless stereo music streaming (thanks to its embedded A2DP profile). This notebook also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 34 card slot (though no PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. Here's the full list of connectivity options: - 2 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players

Beware NOT Vista Business August 25, 2008 Just a heads up. Despite the description this laptop does not come with Vista Business. The first unit I had shipped overnight for a business trip. It came two days later with Vista Home. After explaining to Amazon that it came with Vista Home they agreed to send a replacement. Surprisingly the second one came with home edition as well even after they knew there was a problem with the first shipment. If the home edition is acceptable then this is a very nice laptop.
Perfect companion for mobile users August 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Although I'm a (IBM and/or Lenovo) Thinkpad fan, and I have a Apple 20" iMac at home, This is my second Sony laptop (the other was a SZ)
After evaluating 3 options (Sony Vaio TZ, Apple MacBook Air and Lenovo/IBM Thinkpad X61), I consider the Vaio TZ option as the winner. My reasons are:
1) This is really light weight 2) The 11.1" (wide)screen 1366 x 768 is perfect for work and entertainment 3) In THE SAME UNIT (with no additional accesories) you get: 2 USB ports, SD memory card reader, Memory Stick reader, DVD+RW, VGA Port, Webcam, Fingerprint reader, RJ11 network adapter and RJ45 modem/fax port. 4) It have an excellent battery life, and a small size AC adapter/charger.
For my kind of work, I should move between insecure places and streets, plenty of people, where isn't good idea to be walking with "Laptop" case that can be easily identified by potential thieves. I prefer to be unnoticed. I trasport the laptop and charger in a handy leather folder with zipper, and it seems simply as I were carrying papers or similar stuffs.
I have a full month of use and I think this is really the best choice for mobile users that want to travel light but powerful.
GREAT FOR TRAVEL-This is my 3rd Sony 11.1" laptop! Faster, bigger hard drive, attractive case! August 17, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I take a lot of digital pictures and it is great to slip in the SD card, unload them into the computer, edit them and have a lot of the work done before I get home to make a DVD using the Ken Burns effect.

This is the ideal ultraportable with full range features and strong performance. The TZ is my third Sony ultraportable spanning 6 years (TR, TX, and now TZ) and by far the best that Sony has produced to date. After a deplorable experience with my TX series machine that was an absolute lemon, I researched my options and concluded that the only complete ultraportable on the market that had all I wanted was to go back to Sony.
Due to concerns about performance under the Vista OS, I made sure to get the 7700 processor (best one offered) and 2 GB RAM with the largest HDD offered. The machine runs Office 2007 with ease and performs very well for my use as a consultant. The keyboard is quite comfortable but keep in mind I am a long time user of smaller keyboards. Touch pad and fingerprint sensor are good size and placed smartly. The screen is as crisp as any notebook I have seen. Despite feeling a bit too thin when opening the laptop, it has held up well so far with a bit of extra care. Battery life is phenomenal -- I can go nearly all day on mid-range brightness and closing the lid when I am not using it.
The WWAN via Sprint works perfectly as does the standard 802.11 wireless. Be advised that Sony and Sprint have made use of wireless much harder than needed as you cannot have WWAN and 802.11 sessions active at the same time. So, you cannot use the Sprint WWAN for internet and a wireless network to connect to peripherals (print, scan, mass storage). I am sure there is a way around this though have not had time to study it.
Finally, I love Amazon and nearly always find the best prices here, but they missed the boat on these machines. Sony offers a custom built version of this machine for $300 less and it is an even bigger savings on the flash memory machines. If only someone at Amazon paid attention and adjusted pricing, they might have got my business too.
Less than 2 months old and computer will not boot. Contacted Sony and they recommend system restore followed by depot service shipment. Looking at error message (blue scren on boot) I try to replace memory. Viola - it fixes the issue with a 1GB SODIMM. Call Sony again and am assured I will have replacement 2GB next day. Five days later and no memory and no indication from Sony if it will ever show up. Never seen a company do the right thing anf botch upexecution more. Bought a 2GB SODIMM off Amazon for $40 to save having to deal with Sony incompetence. Better products than support!
Its OK July 11, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The PC is extremely light-weight and cosmetically beautiful even though mine had a tiny scratch on the screen when it arrived. Performance wise I would say it is ok. Most operations perform at lighting speed but has some trouble playing DVDs smoothly when set to full screen. I would say I was expecting more for the price but it's good for frequent travelers.
