Reading has become fun again October 6, 2008 The Kindle had proven to be an excellent reading device with only a few minor glitches - nothing major - and is to be expected with a first generation device like this.
The thing that has impressed me most about it is the fact that it has made reading a fun, easier, more integral part of my everyday life again. Reason being, I have only ever purchased books by authors that I truly know and love. I never cared to spend money on books by unknown authors, mainly because I didn't want the books laying around cluttering up the house, or being detrimental to the environment due to all of the paper used to make them in the first place. Now, I can purchase Kindle books by authors I'm not familar with and try them out so to speak without ending up with a lot of books on the shelf that take up space, never get read, and end up being nothing more then a waste of paper.
We've recently gone to purchasing downloaded music only in order to help save us from having piles of CD's to lug around and store, as well as using up so much plastic for the materials to make them. And now, with the Kindle, we can download all the books we want and not only help our storage problem, but help the environment as well by saving on paper.
For me, it's a win win situation. And besides, this is where our society is heading in the long run - to an "All Digital" format on pretty much everything we use like this. Might as well get used to it now rather then later. :)
Moi's Review October 6, 2008 I received my Kindle as a gift for my anniversary. I commute everyday and it's so great not to have to carry around a bunch of heavy books. Everything I want to read is self contained.
We also just got back from an vacation in Vegas and while waiting at the airport for our flights and sitting for a long time on the plane it was very handy. No more taking books on vacation, all I need is my Kindle.
Fun to read again October 6, 2008 I am 57 years of age, as a result I have used reading glasses for years. The Kindle allows me to read again without glasses. This is worth a lot to me. The font is very clear, and I can read for longer periods of time.
I read a lot of science fiction. Do I wish I could get more titles on the Kindle -- of course. But I believe the number of titles will increase as more people adopt the Kindle or another e-reading device.
I am very satisfied that I purchased mine now
OVERALL, I LOVE IT, BUT..... October 6, 2008 the position of the page-turning "buttons" drives me crazy!!! It seems that no matter what position I hold the device I accidentally hit the button and turn the page - often several pages at a time - and it takes me forever to figure out where I was at when this happened. Granted, if you don't accidentally hit the buttons, the device will keep track of your place, but if you do hit the buttons, then good luck to you.
I do love the easy of ability to download books from any location and being able to read reviews of the book before completing the download. There seems to be a good variety of books available and if I read about a new book and it's not available through Kindle one week, it's usually available within the next couple of weeks.
I love the ability to change the font - since I'm an aging baby-boomer. It would really be nice to have a light built into the device so I'm not keeping my husband awake at night with a reading light on. The charger completely charges the device very quickly (usually within several minutes).
As for service, I did have a major problem with my first device (a big blank square on the screen) and I called Customer Service. The representative was very polite and helpful. He talked me through resetting the device and, when that didn't work, he sent me a new device within a couple of days and I got an e-mail informing me when they had received the defective device. I don't even think I had to pay any postage, but I'm not entirely sure about that.
Please, please, please I hope when Amazon releases a new version I hope the page-turning feature is designed to be more user-friendly. That's my main complaint and, to me, it's a MAJOR complaint!!
ok cover, bad stand October 6, 2008 0 out of 6 found this review helpful
I bought this thinking it would protect my new Kindle from fingerprint smudges and also hold it up so I could read without holding the Kindle.
It will keep the Kindle cleaner, but the stand feature is worthless. It lacks the strength to keep the Kindle upright in anything less than a straight up position. In other words, if you want to tilt the kindle back a bit to make the angle easier to read, the unit just falls over. And you can forget about touching the "page turn" button without it collapsing also.
