Amazon.com Review
Let's face it: listening to music on an airplane is almost impossible. Even if you crank the music up louder than the engines, chances are you'll still miss most of the music and subject yourself to shrill, high frequencies that induce fatigue. The Koss Quiet Zone QZ/2000 headphones, or stereophones, as Koss calls them, are tailor-made for use in planes or other environments plagued by loud or intrusive background noise.

Using a sophisticated system of noise cancellation, the QZ/2000 headset significantly reduces the perceived noise level of static low-frequency sounds. In doing so, the headphones also cancel a portion of the music at those frequencies, but the net effect is unquestionably improved clarity in your music. The QZ/2000 works well for general noise dimming, even if you don't intend to listen to anything. Just put them on, switch the noise cancellation on, and enjoy your quieter environment.

Sometimes the absence of one noise reveals another, previously unnoticed noise (usually a high-frequency tone), which can be distracting. But by and large, we found the QZ/2000 effective at reducing noise from air conditioners, freeway traffic, and even general office din. Most pleasing is the Quiet Zone effect on listening to music at low levels: with less environmental noise, music can be heard more cleanly and more fully at lower volumes, so it sounds better and is also safer.

As headphones, the Quiet Zone 2000s are decent, though not great--clearly, you're paying for the noise reduction here. The 'phones are mellow and full-bodied, if slightly muddy, with little in the way of high-frequency detail. This last factor also keeps any sense of harshness out of the program--not such a bad thing, given the strident nature of many headphones.

While the QZ/2000 claims to reduce high-frequency noise as well as low, we detected very little noise reduction in the bass range. But for general noise reduction and relaxing in-flight listening, the Quiet Zone QZ/2000 is just the ticket.

Pros:

  • Cancels noise well
  • Enhances clarity
  • Lightweight
  • Works with or without music playing

Cons:

  • Mediocre sound quality
  • Slightly awkward fit

Amazon.com Product Description
Koss's Active Noise Reduction "stereophone" system (better known by most of us as "headphones") reduces harmful and annoying low-frequency sounds such as airplane, automobile, and other transportation noises. Besides freeing your mind to focus on your music, this system has the extra advantage of improving sound quality by removing sounds that would otherwise mask or obscure portions of your listening material. The QZ-200 is collapsible and comes with a compact control case.

5 out of 5 stars KOSS QZ-2000   August 25, 2008
VERY FAST SHIPMENT. WELL PACKAGED. THIS UNIT WORKS AS
ADVERTISED AND A BIT MORE. VERY HIGH QUALITY AS IS
KNOWN WITH KOSS. I LIKE THE FIT OF THE UNIT OVER THE
EARS BUT NOT THE TOP. THEY USE CHEAP METAL THAT LAYS ON
THE HEAD AND THE WEIGHT OF THE UNIT PULLS DOWN ON THE TOP.
BUT WORKS EXCELLENT. THE BEST I HAVE TESTED. THEY LOOK ALOT
LIKE THE PORTAPRO'S BY KOSS AND MAY HAVE THE 50 MM DRIVERS ALSO.
FOR THE BASS IS THE SAME GOOD QUALITY.
HAPPY CAMPER

5 out of 5 stars Excellent sound   March 7, 2006

I mainly use this item for my job as a medical transcriptionist, which means that I wear these on my head for eight hours a day, five days a week. I've tried many other brands of headphones and these are by far the most comfortable to wear for long periods of time. They do not press hard into the ears or cause them to get "hot". Soundwise, they are excellent at cancelling constant background noises and hums. Even so, I can still clearly hear the conversations of people around me. I mainly use these headphones to listen to the dications of physicians, however, music sounds great on them as well.

3 out of 5 stars the work but are not durable or for the big heads   November 9, 2005

i bought a pair at a local store in late 2001 for use at work and on occasional airplane flights. they work well. but they press on the earlobe too much to be comfortable without pain for more than 3-4 hours at a time. maybe its my large head or maybe its just these phones.

they fold up nicely and include a good travel bag. a pair of rechargable AA batteries in these lasts seemingly forever.

regardless, the foam cover on them has completely deteriorated and i can't find anywhere that sells a replacement. bad!

pick other headphones with a vynil or velvet liner rather than foam if you'll be using these a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Hi performance, good warranty   September 28, 2005

Active noise reduction systems (e.g. QZ-2000) have microphones to measure ambient noise waves. They then add a signal to the headphone output that is equal and opposite in phase which cancels noise, and this is especially effective for low frequency noise. The QZ-2000 active cancellation (based upon my experience on airplanes and in noisy HVAC environments) is terrific. The relatively open design supplies little passive absorption of noise, but allows you to hear conversation. When my QZ-2000s broke (after rattling around my computer bag for several years and many trips), Koss fixed them free, good as new. QZs are cheaper by half than one popular (ryhmes with "hose") unit, but the latter offers both active and passive NR. If you are trying to kill higher frequency noises and don't need to hear anything ambient, you may wish to consider the "Hose" or other units with passive (muffling) NR.

I hook the QZ-2000s up to my PDA, which I use as a jukebox, on cross-country flights. Noise reduction terrific, sound quality very good (but not quite Pro 4AA), battery life outstanding, reasonable price. Physical durability has not been horrible, but could be better. Outstanding mfr service after sale.

Man, I wish that they would create a similar unit with a mike on a mini-boom for telephone and computer VOIP use.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for plane flights.   December 6, 2004

I have read some of the reviews and am a bit puzzled. I am
getting a 2nd set for my gf, and have had none of the sound
issues complained. Quite the opposite. I have tried several
sets of lower priced units, and found the noise (hiss) from
the electronics to be quite unacceptable. The 2000's have
no audible hiss or artifact noise whatsoever. While they don't
cancel all frequencies, I can now hear my laptop with about 1/4
the voulme level on a plane flight, which is why I bought them.
Overall, and excellent noise canceling system. And I don't
really think that perfect sound is available on a plane.
For what it's worth. :)
