Amazon.com Product Description Whether you're e-mailing family and friends, balancing your online checkbook, or listening to your digital music collection, the HP Compaq Presario SR2170NX offers a versatile, strong base for your home computing needs as well as easy-to-use multimedia features. Focusing on affordability, this desktop provides room to grow with the ability to add up to 2 GB of RAM, available PCI and expansion slots, and access to a wide variety of peripherals via its four USB 2.0 ports. It's also chock-full of security and productivity software to get you going as soon as the PC's unpacked from its box, including Symantec Norton Internet Security 2007 and Microsoft Works 8. You can also easily burn your home video productions to DVD for friends and family with the dual-layer, multi-format LightScribe DVD/CD burner, which enables you to store up to 8.5 GB of data on a DL disc, and manage your family's photo library with HP Photosmart Premier software. Other features include a 3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 631 processor, 160 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 video processor (with 128 MB of dedicated memory), and a multiformat, dual-layer DVD burner (which can also create CDs) with LightScribe capability. It comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic, which delivers a safer, more reliable, and more productive computing environment. Vista integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures. The Basics
- Processor: While it's not as sexy as its newer multiple core siblings, this hyper-threading Intel Pentium 4 631 processor (3.0 GHz) still provides more than enough power and speed for home multimedia use and helps make this desktop an overall affordable package. It also features a decently fast 533 MHz front-side bus (FSB) speed and a large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) This processor sits in the middle of its class (as of January 2007).
A hyperthreading processor helps a PC run several demanding applications at the same time. This technology enables the processor to execute two threads (parts of a program) in parallel, boosting performance during key high-drain procedures. This results in more efficient software performance, such as faster reaction times in gaming applications, and enhanced multitasking. - Hard Drive: The 160 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) is about average in size for desktop PCs. This SATA hard drive has a 3Gb/s interface speed that enables up to 300MB/s data transfer rates (double the speed of the current SATA interface of 1.5Gb/s).
- Memory: The 1 GB of installed RAM (PC4200, 2 x 512 MB, 533 MHz) is a good start, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and productivity suites. This desktop has a good 2 GB maximum RAM capacity (2 x 1 GB). Also, to receive the benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
- DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R DL Write Once, 16x DVD+R, 8x DVD+RW, 16x DVD-R, 6x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, 40x CD-R, 32x CD-RW write speeds and 40x CD-ROM, and 16x DVD-ROM read speeds.
This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.
- Keyboard & Mouse: It comes with a Compaq keyboard and scroller mouse (both with PS/2 connections).
Video & Audio Video is powered by the ATI Radeon Xpress 1100, which delivers stable and reliable visual power for business and communications applications as well as demanding 3-D games and hi-def video viewing. It features 128 MB of dedicated graphics memory and can provide up to 319 MB of total available graphics memory as allocated by Windows Vista. It also offers an integrated audio card that can produce high definition surround sound configurable to 6 speakers. Networking, Connectivity & Expansion For expansion, this desktop has three PCI slots (two available), one PCI Express x16 slot (available), two 5.25-inch external bays (one available), one external 3.5-inch bays (available), and one internal 3.5-inch bay (occupied). It comes with the following external connections: - 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players (2 in front, 2 in rear)
- 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
- 1 VGA monitor port
- 1 headphone (front)
- 1 microphone/line-in/line-out (rear)
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems). Operating System Windows Vista Home Basic is the operating system for users with basic computing needs, such as surfing the Internet, corresponding with friends and family using e-mail, or performing basic document creation and editing tasks. Additionally, Windows Vista Home Basic integrates new search tools throughout the operating system to help you quickly find the precise file or program you need. Every edition of Windows Vista provides the essential tools and technologies to help protect you whether you are browsing the Internet, connecting to a wireless network, or just reading e-mail. All editions of Windows Vista include new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures long before you have lost any important personal data. And, all Windows Vista editions include parental control features that allow you to manage and monitor your family's use of games, the Internet, instant messaging, and other activities. Preloaded Software Includes Microsoft Works, Symantec Norton Internet Security 2007 (with 60 days of Live Update), Roxio Creator, DVD Play, and HP Total Care Advisor. Dimensions & Weight This desktop measures 7.15 x 16.25 x 15.4 inches (WxDxH) and weighs approximately 24 pounds. Not bad with XP or Ubuntu July 13, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Just a quick note here. This thing ran poorly with Vista. Partially because it is under resourced for Vista...probably more due to Vista being crap.
I ran Ubuntu on it for a while and that worked great.
Recently I've put XP on it. It took me some time to get the right drivers because Compaq does not supply XP drivers. However, I found a helpful forum that recommended using the ATI drivers found on the AMD website. Using the ATI Catalyst suite for the Video drivers and Southbridge drivers has worked great. All other drivers can be updated via Microsoft Windows Update > Hardware updates. You can find the ATI drivers here: http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/integrated-xp.
Good luck, Mike
OMG! Is the MB incompatible with Vista? May 2, 2008 This machine was one of the first Vista machines so I am wondering if they just stuck Vista on it before all the MB drivers were fully tested. It's been just over a year now and MS updates have not helped make it run any better. I'm not kidding, it's like an old 8088! We're giving up and putting XP on it so we can run a program or two.
Not sure what the deal is with other people's... February 29, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
...but I got this computer as a refurb (might have fixed the things everyone was complaining about then :P). So far, I've had very minimal problems with it. I use this machine for programming and gaming, and it does everything I ask with no problems. If you're into serious gaming I would make RAM/video card upgrades, but other than that this PC is perfect for work or play. I'm able to use Oracle 10 and Visual Studio at the same time and it doesn't tax the system at all. The HD is the perfect size for my music collection and files too. It's also pretty light weight which makes it easy to travel with from home to college. It DOES have a Pentium 4 though which can run hot so the fan will kick on for a few minutes until it cools off.
As for Vista, I haven't had any problems with that either. It installed drivers on its own for every piece of hardware I've connected to it. I know what people mean by Internet Explorer issues, but this is easily fixed with Fire Fox (stay as far away as you can from Safari for PC...it takes forever). I guess the hardest part of it all was learning where things moved to. For example My Computer was replaced with Computer, and some of the network configuration things are hard to find. It seems pretty stable...haven't had a single computer crash, and when it finds an error in something it searches for solutions rather than making you waste time looking up error codes and patches.
Stay away! September 8, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Worked fine for about 36 hours then video card died. It was just long enough for me to move all of my data over from my old computer and reinstall most of my software. I don't have time for POS computers like this. I guess I should have read the reviews before purchasing! To be fair to Amazon, this computer was purchased elsewhere.
This computer is a nightmare! July 27, 2007 5 out of 9 found this review helpful
I just purchased a Compaq Presario SR2170NX last week. The Vista software will not allow me to continue an online course I was taking and is incompatible with other applications I was using with XP. I loaded the updates and patches the website said would fix my problem, now the computer says that its D:Drive is full. I just bought this thing and have not even started loading software on it yet! I've had the same problems others have described with the computer locking up for no reason and have had to pull the plug. Don't buy this computer. Spend more for a quallity product.
