Some good ideas, many rehashed, not too many projects August 22, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book should probably be renamed Recycle it! That is truly the focus of this somewhat preachy book on recycling. Don't get me wrong - I am an avid recycler; however rather than encourage kids to cut up all the junk mail maybe encouraging Mom and Dad to subscribe to green dime and get rid of it would be better. So - it's preachy. I got it for projects.
It is divided into sections - Paper, Plastics, Metal, Textile/Fabric While visibly appealing, there are actually very few projects per section. Most of the projects seem to be projects I remember from the magazine Family Fun. Another problem is that the examples of plastics are not realistic - e.g. purple plastic bottles (look like water bottles) - does the author want me to go to the craft store and PURCHASE these? What happened to recycling? I am more apt to have clear plastic bottles - so show me examples of this. Additionally, there are many examples of projects - make a sun catcher out of a bottle! - but no clear instructions that a 9 year old could follow (just a page full of pictures of several ideas).
So, I've seen better - much better. If you do decide to buy this book, consider it an "idea" book and don't expect a lot of tutorial beyond making paper bowls and homemade paste (which are actually pretty useful).
Great book to have for anyone!! August 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is a gotta have for just about anyone that has kids or works with kids!!! The pictures are bright and colorful and the ideas are new and exciting!!! I am so glad that I picked this one up. I work at a Christian school preschool class and we have lots of neat ideas that we do but this book was filled with all new ones that we had never tried or had seen at conferences. These are easy projects that can be done at home just as they could be done at a school too. Love the book!!!!
