Why I'd recommend this one July 12, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
I just got through talking to a local Poison Control director for research. Why? Because caffeine poisoning and reactions and concerns about caffeine have prompted many parents, teens and others to call these centers with symptoms that go beyond the usual jittery nerves and buzz of normal caffeine drinkers.
To be honest, I enjoy a daily cup of coffee as much as many people. I'm not a purist and I haven't sworn off caffeine or drinks that contain it. But the scary reality is also that products like potato chips, breath mints and some energy drinks contain as much caffeine as 2 cups of coffee! Potato chips?! Yes, you read that right.
Now imagine this: an unwitting teen or child or even a toddler chugs an energy drink or swallows some breath mints, following that with those high energy potato chips. Without eating or drinking another thing, that person could have high levels of caffeine in his system. With recent reports linking caffeine to higher rates of miscarriage, perhaps it is time to think about what caffeine can do to developing teens and children.
There is no regulation of these products. This book can tell you a bit more about the dangers of caffeine and how and why people might want to think about which foods and drinks and candies contain caffeine.
Again, I'm no purist. But the facts about poison control centers and increased caffeine poisonings are real. People are reacting to caffeine more often. I don't know if they are INTENTIONALLY taking in large amounts of caffeine or simply don't realize that some over the counter meds, breath mints, jelly beans, energy drinks and..yes. even potato chips can contain caffeine. But I tend to think that increased awareness is a good thing. Now you know.
This book will reveal what you can do about the amount of caffeine you injest, how to go through caffeine withdrawal or cut back (if you want)...and more.
Many impressionable children are at risk to a myriad of health problems caused by caffeine February 24, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I suspect that a few Starbucks stock holders like Richard Johnson are attempting to discredit the author of this book, who among other things is the founder of the Caffeine Awareness Alliance, a not-for profit organization.
Excessive caffeine is awful for you and this book defines the risks taken when consumed.
Overzealous? - hardly. Historical? sure. Theoretizing? Nope, this book is packed with countless clinical studies to help you draw your own conclusion. I fully support her efforts.
So many impressionable children are at risk to a myriad of health problems caused by caffeine including ADD, hyperactivity, poor concentration and caffeine addiction.
It's interesting that Coca-Cola & PepsiCo started listing on their labels the caffeine content. I think the efforts of the author and her organization are paying off. Now only if the coffee industry followed this example that would be great (c'mon Starbucks)
This well-research book is worth every penny! February 24, 2007 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
I learned so much by reading this book. I discovered that moderate coffee drinkers (those who consumed two or three cups a day) raised their risk of having a heart attack by 60% by drinking a cup of coffee. But light coffee drinkers increased their risk of heart attack by more than four times with one cup, according to the study found in this book.
Caffeine has been proven to compound the effects of a stressful situation. According to the author, studies have shown that the same stessful situation on caffeine will cause a much greater increase in both blood pressure and heart rate.
To all you naysayers thinking that caffeine is ok, think again. You can find a wealth of information in this book or checkout Pubmed online for more studies on caffeine.
This well-research book is worth every penny. The knowledge I obtained from this book.......priceless.
Health problems caused by caffeine including ADD, hyperactivity, poor concentration February 23, 2007 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
I've struggled with caffeine for years. This is the first source that gives a complete review of the topic and offers an approach to becoming caffeine free without the headache and withdrawal symptoms experienced when going cold turkey. So many impressionable children are at risk to a myriad of health problems caused by caffeine including ADD, hyperactivity, poor concentration and caffeine addiction
The section on women's health is an eye opener also. And all the studies are recent unlike other caffeine books I found that are so dated. I started talking to my co-worker about the facts in the book and he decided to give up caffeine for the first time in years. Buy the book, it could change your life.
Tons of facts & sense of urgency spoke to me! February 22, 2007 This book reads like a page turning thriller novel. I took myself off of a steady caffeine intake due to its side-effects of increased nervousness and stomach difficulties many years ago.
It was only recently that I discovered the key to my fibrocystic breast disease was caffeine ingested earlier in my life. So Marina's book and its tons of facts with their sense of urgency clearly spoke to me.
She covers many aspects of why caffeine is dangerous-not harmful but dangerous-to us as individuals and as a society. Caffeine addictions span all age groups and socio-economic backgrounds.
Its hidden use in many brand name products makes it seemingly more difficult to eradicate from our individual lives.
Particularly after reading the information so readily available and organized in this book, kicking the caffeine habit should become paramount to us all.
Start with yourself today, that's the most important first step and then send this book on. It deserves to be read, to be recommended for others to read and to be re-read as confirmation to continue on the path from addiction to being fully without caffeine.
