5 out of 5 stars A unique source of the most recent diabetes research and its practical implications   November 13, 2008

The author presents information you won't get at your endocrinologist's office, because most doctors don't have the time to read the latest research and often blindly follow the recommendations of the ADA. You'll learn what a truly normal blood sugar looks like, the development and course of diabetes, how to control or reverse the disease through changes in diet, etc., all based on recently published peer-reviewed studies which are cited in the book. A really helpful chapter is "Working with Doctors and Hospitals," which not only tells how to choose a good doctor, but what you have a right to expect from your doctor and what to do if he or she does not match up to the critera outlined by the author. In short the book is an invaluable source for getting your blood sugar under control and keeping it there.

5 out of 5 stars A must read!   October 8, 2008

I was recently diagnosed with gestational diabetes, and searching for information. This book is WONDERFUL. It gave me hope, and a reason to take good care of my body, as the horrible side effects (neuropathy, retinopathy, etc.) are NOT inevitable! The author does a great job of explaining research and every aspect of diabetes in a way that the average person can understand. This should be required reading for any person diagnosed with diabetes.

5 out of 5 stars A great book!   September 9, 2008

As a diabetes "newbie" (just diagnosed a couple of weeks ago), I decided I'd better learn all I could while waiting for my appointment with the booked-weeks-in-advance endocrinologist. I ordered both "Blood Sugar 101" and Dr. Bernstein's book. Both are jam-packed with information, but Dr. Bernstein left me feeling a bit overwhelmed, and also scared of what would happen if I couldn't follow his program to the letter.

Jenny's book, on the other hand, made me feel like "I can do this". It is clearly written and provides a step-by-step program for getting one's blood sugar under control. Best of all, I can sit down and read it without suffering a panic attack. Highly recommended for the newly diagnosed, or anyone wanting to learn more about this disease.

5 out of 5 stars Good information   September 7, 2008

Book is organized in a question and answer format which I find helpful. I liked it so well I bought a copy for my sister whose husband has type 2 diabetes as well.

The book is by a diabetic who has a website and includes more than the general information and answered some of my questions.

Doctors and diabetes educators don't have time for you so you really need to buy books.

Another book I liked is Sugar Coating Diabetes which critiques a lot of information out there and especially the pharmaceutical industry which does not pull bad drugs. I buy a lot of the suggestions that come up when I make a purchase on Amazon. I also recommend Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution which is much more comprehensive. I learned about that book on a diabetic web page.
