Product Description
Referred to as the "Grand Prix of epidemiology" by The New York Times, this study examines more than 350 variables of health and nutrition with surveys from 6,500 adults in more than 2,500 counties across China and Taiwan, and conclusively demonstrates the link between nutrition and heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. While revealing that proper nutrition can have a dramatic effect on reducing and reversing these ailments as well as curbing obesity, this text calls into question the practices of many of the current dietary programs, such as the Atkins diet, that are widely popular in the West. The politics of nutrition and the impact of special interest groups in the creation and dissemination of public information are also discussed.

5 out of 5 stars The China Study   October 5, 2008

The impact of this book literally changed my life, my family's life and hopefully many others I am able to pass this information along to. As a health care provider, an avid reader and someone who used to think I was making great choices, I now have a much deeper understanding of nutritional value and the true impact diet has on our entire well being. The author has compiled and heavily contributed to one of the most comprehensive all-encompassing, indisputable realm of facts on the "foods" we eat that I have seen to date. Don't think you've already heard it! This is NOT a "diet" book! This is a book of truths and if you have any interest what so ever in living healthy, long and happy and seeing those around you experience the same, then read this book! I started making changes in my eating habits at the first chapter and just a few weeks later, I can't tell you how much better I feel, mentally and physically. Let the China Study show you the repeated scientific evidence of HOW, WHAT and WHY the foods you eat do what they do to/for the human body, then make your own choices! Don't let genetics and/or commonality of diease process, i.e., heart disease, diabetes, cancers, etc. lead you to believe this is simply your hand in life! You truly need to have this knowledge to understand that you can have control over your health and happiness. Blessings in Great Health!

4 out of 5 stars A Must Read   September 28, 2008

This is one of the most powerful books on modern diet and disease ever written. It should be a must read for all health careers students.
Clear, concise. A real hard look at traditional mantras on human protein consumption.

1 out of 5 stars BIG BUILD UP AND BIG LET DOWN   September 28, 2008

In the beginning of the book it appears that Campbell is going to give specific scientific findings of a study done in China that would confirm the connection of animal protein diet with cancer. He starts with studies of rodents that showed 100% statistical connection. It was expected that the same type of information would ensue, but it didn't.

As the above review by Joseph DeMarinis "Truth in science" so decidedly outlines, Campbell goes mostly into broad statements taken from the dogma of vegetarianism.

I got this book after taking the caregivers course at the Gerson Institute in San Diego where Dr. Max Gerson proved that a 100% vegetarian diet with juicing and techniques to pull out toxins cures cancer-- even advanced cancer after conventional medical techniques have failed. The Gerson diet stops tumor growth and completely invigorates the immune system to curing many other twentieth century diseases. It follows that a diet mostly of vegetables and fruits would be beneficial for preventing disease.

This book did not come close to my expectations and is not recommended.

One final point for the readers of this concerns the insistance that a 100% vegan diet cures heart disease. In the book by Internationally acclaimed Cardiologist, Dr. Sodi Pallares, "My Hearts Health", Dr. Pallares states that after he observed thousands of patients on his vegetable and fruit diet that he found they did better with some good fats (2 tbls per day) and some protein. He lived to age 90 on that diet.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Nutrition: Life Altering!   September 15, 2008

A friend of mine recommended this book and I can't thank him enough! I have read it cover to cover and so has my husband. We bought 5 copies and have been lending them to friends to read.
My husband and I had already been vegetarians and we knew all the health benefits of this lifestyle. The information confirmed all of our reasons and also convinced us to cut out dairy as well.
The book is well organized and written in a way that can be easily understood. The research is well documented and the graphs and charts are very detailed and informative.
I highly recommend anyone who is interested in their health to read this book!

4 out of 5 stars Proof is in the blood test results   September 13, 2008

I am a Asian-American (Japanese specifically), I was born and raised in Hawaii and moved to the California when I was 27 years old. I grew up eating meat and enjoyed that until a few months ago. I have always had high cholesterol (in the 220-240 range) and I thought it was genetic. I was into the low-carb, higher protein diet the last few years, probably because it justified eating a lot of meat, which I loved. A few months ago I had some blood work done and I had a total cholesterol of 259, worse a LDL "bad" cholesterol of 164. About this time a friend at work recommended this book, I ordered it and read it. Took everything with a grain of salt but remembered some studies in the 1970s that he referred to about Japanese Americans in Hawaii and California having typical health issues that their Japanese counterparts did not. I gave up most of the red meat and dairy for about three months, ate mostly a vegan diet with some poultry and a little more fish, mostly sushi. After only three months my recent results were total cholesterol of 190, LDL of 104, my doctor went from very concerned and recommending cholesterol reducing drugs to unconcerned. It may not be for everyone but I am convinced that this may have prolonged my life to enjoy with my young children.
