Product Description
Beating Cancer with Nutrition Sugar feeds Cancer: diet and supplements can starve tumors
Nutrition makes chemo and radiation more toxic to the tumor while protecting the patient
Nutrition changes underlying causes of cancer, improving outcome for cancer patients regardless of other therapies. Why Beating Cancer with Nutrition is unique: The book was developed after working with over 500 cancer patients and organizing 3 international symposiums on the subject. The information contained in BCN is both scientifically backed with references and clinically proven in the hospital with patients. This information helps cancer patients to improve quality and quantity of life. BCN had been translated into Japanese and Chinese and is being translated into Korean. BCN had become a home study continuing education course for registered nurses. BCN 2001 version will contain a 72-minute audio CD version in response to the requests from tired cancer patients who said they needed and audio version of the book to get started. BCN had sold 110,000 copies in 7 years in print, which is impressive for small publishers. Why Patrick Quillin is Unique: For the past 10 years, Dr. Patrick Quillin has served as the Director of Nutrition for Cancer Treatment Centers of America. He is an internationally respected expert in the area of nutrition and cancer. He has earned his bachelor's, Master's and doctorate degrees in nutrition and is a registered and licensed dietitian ( RD & LD) and Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) with the American College of Nutrition.

5 out of 5 stars Informative   November 19, 2008
I had gotten this book back in January of 2007, when my mother-in-law had colon cancer. I was the one taking care of her after her surgery and this book was very informative and very helpful. The diet that was given to my mother-in-law after surgery was terrible. Lots of canned food and hidden surgars. They wanted her to gain weight, but the way they were trying to achieve this was absolutely horrible. This book came in handy for me and I was able to change her diet completely. The only thing that she hasn't been able to give up is ice-cream, but other than that we used this book as a bible to help her get healthy.

The doctors wanted her to have kemo and radiation since her cancer marker were so high before the surgery and were still above the mark that they reccomend for treatment, but my mother-in-law decided that since her lymph nodes and all the tissure around the tumor was negative of cancer, she opted out. With diet we were able to bring her markers under the mark that they recommend treatment. I gave her the book and then recently bought another for me to have here at home. They test her blood every three months and every six she has other tests and so far she is doing remarkably well. The doctors are very impressed with her. She also is now walking about six miles a day. She says that walking really makes her feel good and she has her routine that she does, rain or shine.

Thank you Mr. Quillin for writing this book.

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative Book   November 3, 2008
Out of the three books on fighting cancer with nutrition that I recently ordered, I would say that this one is the best. It is very informative and easily understandable and it also has a good variety of recipes to choose from. Also included in the back of the book is a chart listing foods that are considered the healthiest to the worst which makes selecting the healthy foods very easy.

5 out of 5 stars I believe this program definitely works and has merit..   November 2, 2008
I am now a beleiver of the approach and of the Immunopower recommended by Dr.Quillen. My husband was diagnosed with kidney cancer this past year- a total surprise to us as he was initially in the ER for a possible appendicitis scare. The kidney tumor found by accident was measured as at least .50 cm and was said to be (by a top specialist and teacher at a very excellent hospital)to be "very, very, very aggressive in nature-a Furhman grade 3 and possibly a 4" from its appearance on the CAT scan.
I had picked up this book just browsing in a local bookstore before his surgery was to be take place in a month-I figured"Why not?" and ordered the Immunopower. I was fortunate enough to have my husband agree to not only take the Immunopower, but also to follow the eating plan advocated by Dr.Quillen. The good news-the tumor was found to be smaller than initially measured causing it to be Staged at 1 B-and the best news ever-the Fuhrman grade was a 2-and the surgeon said" I am pleased and happily surprised to report that the pathology report showed the Fuhrman grade was Grade 2 and not anywhere as aggressive as I initially thought it to be". We were so fortunate in that the laproscopic surgery to remove his left kidney resulted in the surgeon being able to extract the entire tumor encased in a layer of fat.( While that was not related to Dr.Quillens work, but to some Higher Power and good fortune,) I do believe the Immunopower reduced the aggressiveness of the tumor in a very short time in this case.

5 out of 5 stars What you need to know to prevent cancer and heal more quickly if you have it   June 20, 2008

What author Patrick Quillin wants people to know is that there is a direct, documented connection between diet and cancer. You will come away from this book armed with the knowledge you need to prevent cancer or to increase your odds of healing if you have cancer.

Malnutrition, caused when cancer shifts the metabolism into high gear and induces loss of appetite, kills 40 percent of cancer patients. Additionally, cancer researchers estimate that a large percentage of all cancers can be avoided with proper nutrition, low stress levels and psychological wellness.

Quillin, a nutritionist and medical researcher, has spent over 15 years working with 3,000 cancer patients in cancer treatment centers to improve their outcomes. The bottom line of Quillin's research and book is that a well-nourished cancer patient can better manage the disease, and has fewer infections, less side-effects from chemotherapy and radiation, as well as a better quality and quantity of life and improved chances for complete remission.

The book also explains how cancer forms, how various chemotherapies work and how vitamins, minerals and other nutrients (from supplements or food) can work in harmony with chemotherapy to improve treatment results. "Nutrition can make medical therapy more of a selective toxin against the cancer and less damaging to the patient," says Quillin, who advocates that nutrition therapy is an essential part of a comprehensive cancer treatment because:

*Proper nutrition protects patients against the toxic effects of chemotherapy and radiation without reducing their effectiveness in killing cancer;
*Nutrients support the immune system in sequestering and eliminating cancer; and
*Tumors feed on sugar, therefore certain diet restrictions are crucial. Food additives such as Aspartame (NutraSweet) and Saccharin have both been linked to cancer and should also be avoided. Sucralose (Splenda) seems to be safe.

Quillin does not offer prescriptions or treatment for cancer in all it's forms; rather he shows how patients can supplement their current treatment with specific vitamins, minerals and nutrient-rich foods to get better outcomes.

Beating Cancer With Nutrition is also a book for people who want to prevent cancer. People who are inactive, stressed, and have poor diets (high in processed food and low in vegetables and fiber) have an exceptionally high likelihood of developing cancer.

Toxins - The average person comes into contact with 20,000 known carcinogens.
Distress--Scientific studies have found that people with severely stressful lives can be 1500% more prone to developing cancer.
Poor nutrition--The body is built and repaired by the nutrients in our food. We need certain nutrients to fight cancer.
Lack of exercise--40 percent of Americans will develop cancer in their lifetimes, but only 14 percent of highly active American will develop cancer.

Quillin's discussion of what causes cancer shows that we can reduce our chances of getting it by adopting nutrition and exercise habits and avoiding stress and toxins. Quillin offers lengthy explanations of which nutrients are necessary to keep our immune system strong enough to destroy cancer cells as they form.

Cancer patients and healthy people alike will find this book to be eye opening. We seem to have some measure of control in avoiding cancer. This book will make you think hard about your diet, your stress levels and how you can give yourself the best chances of recovering from or avoiding cancer.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Resource for Cancer patients   May 17, 2008
I've purchased this book on two different occasions and given it to friends with cancer. It is a great resource for the recipes alone, and also the vitamin therapy that Quillan outlines in detail. The first edition I bought also came with an accompanying CD, which was very helpful. Nutrition is incredibly important in daily life, but especially a battle with cancer.
