Don't waste your money or your time .... November 6, 2008 After having read and been totally charmed by the first book in this series "His Mistress By Morning" (an engaging Cinderalla like story), I was eagerly looked forward the second installment "Tempted By The Night".
After having read the back cover, I was expecting a regency romance up to the usual high standards one expects from Elizabeth Boyle. The reality was just the opposite.
Tempted by the night is a paranormal story thinly disguised as a regency romance. I am sure I'm not the only reader that absolutely detests paranormals. The author, editors, and publishers owe it to their readership to accurately label books so that the reader knows what they are getting. Had the back cover accurately described the story, I would have passed on this one.
If you want a story with an unlikeable hero, a daft heroine and a plot that absoultely shatters any resemblance to reality or romance, go for it. If you are looking for keeper, save your time and your money. I wish I had.
Elizabeth Boyle is one of my favorite authors. I sincerly hope future books get back in touch with what makes this author so good... a first rate romance set in the regency period. You can bet I will be skimming through the next one BEFORE I buy.
Not my favorite. October 10, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is the second book in the series, the first being 'His Mistress by Morning' which I loved. There were some holes in this book that I just didn't get, the main one being The title characters from this book, Rockhurst and Hermonie, didn't see like the same characters from the the first book.
There was nothing that showed Rockhurst disappearing to save London. Even if there was one scene that he was at a party and Hermonie spotted him disappearing would have been interested, not the 'feeling' she got (out of thin air!) that he was hiding something. And Hermonie getting physically ill whenever Rockhurst was around? She was constantly putting herself out there in His Mistress AND went to the Opera with him and Charlotte, she wasn't in the privy all night.
If I took this as it's own novel, nothing to do with anything else, it would be a 4, but knowing the previous book left me wanting. I hope she does better with the next book.
Nail Biting, Romance and Supernatual... October 4, 2008 Ok, here is the scope - this is not my favorite genre to read - but found myself loving it from the first page. The premise is that Lady Herminone has a HUGE crush on Lord Rockhurst. When she finds a her cousins ring she puts in on for safekeeping only to find out later that he has magical power. She make a wish about Lord Rockhurst! This books has a interesting supernatual twist. If you enjoy the Charmed series or the Buffy Vampire series - give this book a chance.
I would also suggest; Spirited Away (Signet Eclipse), Crazy For You and The Mirror.
Wish this wasn't a growing trend September 13, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I am rather perturbed that historical romance writers are turning all their books in paranormals. Please stop, now. I just want to read a lovely, straight forward romance.
Having said that, I ended up much happier with this book than I thought I would be. It was saved by the two main characters, especially Hermione who was delightfully funny but human. I'll let you off this once, Ms Boyle, don't do it again!

I give this book 0 stars, not the 1 I had to give it to have my review put on-line. They don't let you do 0 or minus. I believe that it was sold under false pretenses. I bought it remembering her book "Something About Emmaline". This book is nothing like it. It is paranormal or fantasy, weird evil. If other authors change what they write they use another name or make it plain with a particular series title and a blurb on the back or in the front that make plain what it is, how it is different from their usual writing and what the reader is expecting. None of that was done by the author or the publisher of this Boyle book. I quit reading the book at page 94 and threw it out, not even taking it in to a used bookstore to swap. I do not want to be passing this kind of stuff on. I feel that they were deliberately deceptive and that I am owed my money back. Marybeth PS I notice that Amazon is saying that those who bought this Boyle book are also buying the new books by Julia London and Victoria Alexander as being similar. They are nothing like this book and it is unfair to London and Alexander to be listed with this book. I have read both of the other books and they are good books, nothing weird. I feel that readers are being deceived.
