Amazon.com Review Designed to catapult your body into a state of fat meltdown, Dr. Atkins's diet has taken America by storm. It targets insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. The bodies of most overeaters are continually in a state of hyperinsulinism; their bodies are so adept at releasing insulin to help convert excess carbohydrates to fat that there's always too much of the hormone circulating through the body. This puts the body into a bind; it always wants to store fat. Even when people with hyperinsulinism try to lose weight--especially when they cut fat but increase carbohydrate consumption--their efforts will fail. This is why Dr. Atkins refers to insulin as "the fat-producing hormone." Dr. Atkins's diet is extremely low in carbohydrates, which helps to regulate insulin production and decrease circulating insulin; less insulin soon results in less fat storage and fewer food cravings. The diet is far from torturous, though--those who've tried it attest that hunger is not a part of this plan. Ninety percent of Dr. Atkins's patients--more than 25,000 of them--have experienced dramatic weight loss. The book includes recipes for such luscious, low-carb dishes as lobster soup, zabaglione, sea bass, and blueberry ice cream, and even includes a carbohydrate gram counter and menus.

A Must For The Atkins' Lifestyle October 9, 2008 I purchased this book because I wanted to see what, if anything, Dr. Atkins had changed from the earlier edition(s) and this editions provides more insight and just tells it like it when you need to change your eating habits and the possible reasons an individual has a weight problem. I am now down 25 lbs and having a great time trying recipes and getting into clothes I haven't worn in a while.
Atkins Diet book is the low-carb Bible September 23, 2008 He researched and introduced the low-carb concepts. Book has clear explanations and many recipes. Highly recommended. (Oh yeah, and it WORKS!)
Most successful diet I ever used. September 17, 2008 I will put this very simply. I had tried many other diets that only worked while I was on them. Dr. Atkins' diet taught me how to eat healthy, feel full, and after I lost the weight I wanted I was able to maintain my weight by continuing to eat most healthful foods. He also explained why his diet works and what to look for in the foods we eat. I would also like to point out that I started an exercise program of walking 1 mile 5 days a week when I could and going to a gym 2 days a week for 30 minutes. I went to Curves for women but any program would work. It is much easier to keep off the weight and feel good by continuing to eat heathy using this book and excersing at the same time. That is the purpose of a diet - helping you to make healthy lifestyle changes, and this diet did it for me.
Easiest Diet I have ever tried! August 18, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have tried Jenny Craig and Nutrisystems and this is the easiest and quickest way to lose weight. The first two weeks were tough but I was encouraged when I saw that I was losing about one pound a day. It has now been seven weeks and I have lost 13 lbs. I need to lose about 15 lbs. to reach my target. I am always surprised to get on the scale and find that I have lost more weight since I never feel hungry. It is very practical b/c you can eat anywhere which has always been a problem for me on other diets. I love this diet and wish that I could have found it years ago. I would have saved a lot of money and learned how to control my weight before it got out of control. My only word of caution about consuming low or no carbs (I never did the no carbs) is to take the recommended supplements. I did not take them at first and had terrible foot and leg cramps during the night. Taking calcium and potassium cured that problem and vitamin B helped with the initial feeling of weakness. I highly recommend this diet to anyone who wants to lose weight quickly and easily.
This diet made me sick. August 18, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Within the first day on this diet I was so dizzy I couldn't stand up without assistance. I thought maybe it was a fluke and I had the flu, so I tried again a few months later. The same thing happened. I was so dizzy and pukey feeling it was unbearable! Someone recommended to me to start out with more carbs. So I started with over twice the amount of carbs atkins says to start out on and I was so dizzy and sick again I couldn't get out of bed. I had my husband bring me a piece of fruit, which I ate, then I laid and bed and the feeling went away after 20 minutes. Obviously this diet isn't for everyone. It can't be everyone who feels this way or they wouldn't have been able to sell so many copies of this book, right?
