Product Description
The Best Life Diet addresses all the things that conspire to make us overweight; since most people find the biggest issue they have is controlling their eating, diet takes the centre stage in this book. Based on a wide variety of satisfying, nutrient-rich and easy-to-find and prepare foods, this diet takes into account that eating is one of our greatest pleasures; you can love to eat and still live happily if you follow his advice. Greene is committed to his readers' success, so the book deals not only with nutritional needs but activity level as well. Greene will help readers understand their own body and what it really needs; of course calories count, but so does the balance of protein and carbohydrate you consume in relation to your real energy needs. So a couch potato should have a relatively lean diet of protein with fewer carbohydrates than a more active person, and an athlete needs more carbohydrates on a daily basis to fuel their higher activity level. Greene also encourages readers to understand and improve their emotional relationship with eating and food, a critical part in changing the way they eat for the better.

5 out of 5 stars Small Gradual Changes Work!   January 13, 2007

I really connected with Bob Greene's Best Life Diet. His approach makes so much sense and, so far has been easy to implement. The fact that he has different phases to get you comfortable with change is very helpful. I loved the "hunger scale" as that really has me focusing on the physical aspects of being hungry rather than eating emotionally.

The fact that Bob names actual brand names in his book is great also. It takes the guess work of of what to eat and has me reading labels as well. And the recipes are simple and easy to make with ingredients that can be found anywhere.

I really liked this book and think it will help many people because it is so easy to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a diet book aimed at changing your weight, and your life!   January 18, 2007

This is first "diet" book Bob Greene has ever written and I find totally on target, and very inspiring. His past books, which focus on fitness, take the same "phased" look at everything, and I personally think it is much easier to make life changes in phases, vs. the way other diet books want you to change everything at once. I was initially concerned about all the product mentions in the book, but I have looked at all the nutritional content online regarding these products and find some VERY encouraging information: no trans fats, low sugar content, whole grains, lots of vegetables, well known and well respected brands, organic foods. And more importantly, these are products I can find in almost any grocery store in America, which takes the guess work out of deciding what to eat. This is going to help millions of people and it will encourage consumers to read labels.

Bob appears to want to change the way some companies formulate their foods based on his Oprah appearance. I applaud his efforts to help people and know that everyone will benefit by following the simple effective plan he has laid out.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, one drawback   January 7, 2007

I love this book. Bob Greene always throws in some zinger that hits me right to the core -- usually something no other diet book manages to touch on. I think he truly uderstands people, better than most weight loss "experts." I also think he really cares about their success.

The ONLY drawback to this book is the constant references to the website. I chose not to belong to it, partly because of the cost, but also because I already belong to something similar connected to the gym where I work out, and it would be silly to subscribe to both. But as usual, the constant references make me feel like I am missing something that I need that isn't covered in the book. I'm sure the book can stand alone so I wish the website could have been mentioned as an aside instead of being peppered throughout the book.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent, Very Do-able Program!   January 6, 2007

Bob Greene's approach to weight loss and living a healthier life is easier than a traditional "diet" because it has you making changes gradually. In Phase One, for 4 weeks, you alter your meal schedule so you are eating breakfast (a long-time struggle for me) and not eating 2 hours before bedtime. Other healthy habits are begun in this Phase, such as drinking more water. Only when you have gotten used to these do you move on to Phase Two, which includes recognizing true hunger, exercising more, and cutting out things like soda and fried foods.

Along the way, he explains the importance of each of these changes in a way that motivates you to try them. Phase Three is for the rest of your life, adding on to your Phase 1 & 2 habits and increasing your intake of healthy foods. There are no food-group restrictions (such as carbs)--everything is possible here, in moderation, and there are many tasty recipes that look easy to prepare.

I think this is a program that can help anyone "ease into" a more healthy way of living, that is realistic and will be easy to stick to. Just making gradual changes over time will eventually lead to lasting weight loss.

5 out of 5 stars Living your Best Life...awesome!   May 13, 2007

I'd bought this book previously, this was a gift for a friend. It is, by far, THE best diet-lifestyle book, ever.

Bob Greene puts everything in an easy to understand and follow format. It is all the things you already knew....just clarified and crystal clear. I have recommended this life style to SO many people.

I have been following it for 12 weeks, I am in week 13 and have lost 22 pounds and 14". I cannot sing Bob Greene's praises enough.

It is step by step and starts you with just developing some new habits. You move along at your own pace. I would strongly recommend the companion web site, too, as it pulls everything together for you.

Anyway, here is to YOUR best life! You can do it! I did, and I feel great! More engery and happiness. What could be better?
Yvette
