Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Experience the next wave of home entertainment with this Blu-ray Disc player, featuring Dolby TrueHD and BD-Live compatibility. Featuring BD-Live compatibility, you can take full advantage of the Bonus View feature of select Blu-ray movies as well as acquire the latest features and updates as they become available. This player also outputs a Full 1080/24p True Cinema picture, plus upscales your existing DVD collection to 1080p when using the HDMI connection. Superior picture quality isn't the only thing you'll notice, the BDP-S350 comes with Dolby TrueHD which delivers sound as stunning as the high definition picture itself. Bringing it all together is the icon based Xross Media Bar, which provides simple navigation of the player's menu system. Quick start-up mode allows operation in less than 6 seconds from when Sony Blu-ray Disc player is powered on. Dolby TrueHD delivers lossless studio master quality audio designed specifically for high definition entertainment like Blu-ray Disc. An incredible sound stage, dynamic range and a stellar Home Theater experience await you with Dolby TrueHD. With up to 7.1 channels of surround sound and audio that is indistinguishable from the original studio version, Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD promises you an extraordinary surround experience. DVD Upscaling via HDMI gets the most out of your existing DVD collection by upscaling standard definition video to near HD quality. Precision Cinema HD upscale uses high bandwidth digital-to-analog conversion and processing to detect image changes at the pixel level, rather than at the level of whole scan lines. Additionally, separate algorithms are used to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are free from motion artifacts. Ethernet port provides connectivity to a home broadband connection so you can download network updates.

4 out of 5 stars Sony Blue-Ray Player   December 3, 2008
I set up the player without problems. The on screen menu was very easy to follow. It was necessary to update the player's firmware.

1 out of 5 stars Sub-standard Blu-ray player (Sony you can do better)   December 3, 2008

I received the player quickly - go Amazon! I set it up to accept hdmi for video and optical for audio. Optical didn't work (unlike my HD-DVD player). I tried three different HDMI cables (all 1.3 gold plated, bla, bla) and the player dropped signal at least 3 times during one movie on several occasions. In addition, artifacts appeared on the screen. To make matters worse, I had to restart the player on multiple occasions to fix audio issues -- crazy distorted and stat icy. RMAed to Amazon and they sent another player. Guess what? Same exact issues popped up, so I sent it back for refund.

Now, I know what you are thinking. My TV or receiver is not working right. Well, my Blu-ray Lite-On BDrom plays movies perfectly on my TV. I'm very disappointed in Sony and plan to avoid their future products. I guess the Sony brand isn't what it once was -- a symbol of quality.

BTW Amazon rocks! They get 5 stars and my future business.

4 out of 5 stars Best player out there that isnt a game console   December 3, 2008
Let me start out by saying that first I was looking at a PS3 which is an amazing blu ray player. I decided it just was not necessary since I have 360 and a Wii. I read reviews and saw that this was a decent player and that the price was coming down on it. Amazon had a nice deal a few weeks back that offered this player for $220 minus $100 if you bought 4 movies with it, most of which were decent titles. At this point I bit.

I have had the player for a few weeks now and am able to write a pretty good review. Ok, so to start the player is very slim and small and fits well anywhere. The setup was a breeze with hdmi as it should as it should be. I upgraded the firmware via the internet without a problem and then started adjusting settings on it. The biggest change to make is the quick startup feature. It take the startup time from 20-30 seconds to less than 10 for me. The only bad thing I have read is that this means the machine is always drawing power. It is worth it though in my opinion. A blu ray disc loads up in about 25 seconds and I have not had a problem watching any movies in it so far. The few dvds have put in it look fantastic also. Once I get a better receiver I am sure I will notice the sound difference also with TrueHD.

For the price I got it for I think it was a good deal. I see it is now available for about $250. At that price I would probably wait for another drop if you can.

Note: If you plan on using BD Live just realize that the USB port in the back is recessed and it makes getting a usb stick in there pretty difficult. I will try and post a picture soon of this for everyone to see.

5 out of 5 stars Great player for a decent price   December 3, 2008
I purchased this unit in October for a good price at the time $265.00. I have a Philips 42" LCD 1080i TV, Philips Soundbar and connected all via HDMI and digital audio. Sound is amazing, upconverts all very well and was a breeze to setup. I chose the CD method to update the firmware. Ordered online and it was delivered in less than a week. Load times a bit slower but well worth the wait. Don't hesitate to get this one.

5 out of 5 stars What a great player!   December 1, 2008

I have a PS3, so I'm already knee deep in the blu-ray experience. I wanted to get a standalone player for the bedroom, so I did a great amount of research. I had it narrowed down to 2 players: The Panasonic BD35 and this player. In the end I picked the Sony because of the price ($189 black Friday) and I'm glad I did. The player is sexy, 2.0 compliant, BD-Live ready (with latest firmware update), and it supports all the new audio codecs...all that one could want in a new BD player.

So far it has played every movie I've thrown at it flawlessly (Spiderman 3, Doomsday, I Am Legend, Rambo, Harry Potter...Phoenix, and Indiana Jones 4). The load times are a tad slower than the PS3, but not much at all. Lastly, the picture is phenomenal, edging out the PS3 even.

So if your researching players like I did, the Sony BDP-S350 is a winning choice.
