Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Nikon's 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor is a high-ratio 11x zoom lens with Nikon's exclusive VR II Vibration Reduction technology. Nikon's VR II provides the equivalent of a shutter speed 4 steps faster than would otherwise be possible, enabling substantially sharper pictures in challenging conditions. The Nikkor 18-200mm lens incorporates two ED glass and three aspheric lens elements to provide optimal color, contrast and clarity while minimizing chromatic aberrations and other distortion, resulting in outstanding image quality and versatility. In addition, Nikon's compact AF-S Silent Wave Motor provides fast and quiet autofocusing while the M/A mode allows for simultaneous switching between Autofocus and manual focus operation.

5 out of 5 stars The Only Lens You Need!   October 4, 2008
If you are like most of us that love photography, you're always looking for the "perfect lens". My camera bag was loaded with various lenses (five prior to this writing) so I would always be ready to capture some interesting shot. I outgrew two camera bags after starting with a very simple LowePro bag and got to the point that I didn't take my camera with me because it was cumbersome. Nikon 18mm-200mm VR lens to the rescue! I knew about this lens because my son had been using it since it first came out and I saw the MANY great photos he took...all with only this one lens. I finally realized that although a wee bit expensive, this one lens would free me of having to carry the big bulky bag, but at the same time would provide coverage for almost any shot I could imagine! I bought this lens from Amazon a few weeks ago and found it to be a perfect lens...VERY sharp, excellent color renditions due to the quality of the coatings and glass, light weight, fast focusing, and gives me the ability to take shots I would've missed before with the excellent VR function! I highly recommend this lens to anyone, amateur or pro (my son is pro photographer, by the way) as it truly is a "one-lens" solution where you don't feel like you've had to sacrifice anything to get this much flexibility!

5 out of 5 stars Good all around lens   October 4, 2008
Camera package didn't come with as much wide angle as I'd like so I thought this lens would make a good addition. I was right. It's easy to use and for my purposes delivers quality images. My main use is for landscape photography and this lens offers both a good zoom range and a nice wide angle all in one package. There are times when changing lens is not always possible (think balloon ride), this lens covers alot of ground. I normally drag along a digital and film camera so less lens to carry will be benefical to camera bag!
Excellent Nikon product as always.

4 out of 5 stars Great lens to keep it on your Camera all the time   October 2, 2008
It's been a month since I bought this lens and everything about this lens is true. It's a great everyday lens. Everything about this lens is great, not good but great. Not spectacular but great. It focus quick and accurate. Color is vibrant and tad too contrast but that can be adjust in camera body.
Everything needs to be adjusted to your personal taste no matter which lens you buy. You also need to sacrifice something to gain something in return. If anyone who think they can have everything in both world must let others know cause they can make fortune. Only thing this lens lacks is f stop. Yes 5.6 is too dark and it might search focusing when it's very dark but can you imagine if Nikon make this lens a 2.8 fixed? how much would it cost and how big and heavy would it be? I don't think Nikon built this lens for the pros but there are many pros using this lens and very happy about it. I was using 18-135 before I got this and they are world of apart. I'm having fun with lens and only thing I will need a single prime lens. Maybe 50mm of 35mm. I'm leaning toward 35mm.

5 out of 5 stars Nikon 18-200mm   September 30, 2008
I think this has been great addition. I wish i had got this sooner... takes out the whole part about caring multiple lenses and all of that... One Lens does it all.. great results and very happy to finally have purchased it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent travel lens, but not the only lens you will ever need   September 26, 2008
The 18-200 VR is an excellent travel lens, is extremely versatile, and good quality overall, but it is not the only lens you will ever need for most people.

It has its flaws, most notably for me are the distortion at 18 mm (which is correctable) and the lens isn't the best as you approach 200 mm, but it still is good enough for most cases. I also noticed it tends to overexpose a hair near 18mm, but exposure comp takes care of that easily, then again this could also be my camera or the shooting situations. I haven't done enough comparisons for this.

The strength are the flexibility and the VR. VR is great and makes hand held shooting with lower shutter speeds great. Think lower light shots hand held at 18mm and 200mm hand held without camera shake.

Traveling this is the lens I use 80% of the time now. For more specific situations I still dig into my lens bag more, particularly for my 12-24 or 50mm 1.8.
