This is my first camcorder, but I did a lot of research before buying. Low light recording is excellent compared to JVC and other brands with HD resolution recorded on an internal hard disk.
Buy the biggest battery you can find for this unit… the one that comes with it doesn’t last long at all.
Also remember that to enjoy HD video you shoot, you’ll have to keep it on the camera or spend quite a bit of extra cash on a blu-ray burner.

I have had this camcorder for 2 weeks now and have shot hd video indoors and out in low and average lighting conditions. The video is superb. Stunning clarity. It is a huge step up from the Sony DCR-TRV 530 I used to use. The Touchscreen is easy to use, large, clear, and bright. Battery life could be better, but other batteries are available. The digital stills in some cases are better than with my canon s3is. Face detection and image stabilization work well. Viewing the stills or the footage on the computer or a tv are a snap. Burning archives to dvd was also. Itching to buy a blu ray player for my hdtv and home theater now!
I would purchase an extra battery and charger. Got mine from us1camera for $1k, case, camera, extra battery and charger, 2 lenses, 3 filters, bag, tripod and more. Free shipping. Excellent camera, deal and service.

Great camera   April 1, 2008
For a digital camera novice who has used the same one for the last 5 years, this is a great design in terms of portability and lightweight. I wish the buttons were easier to interpret and that there were a simple mode to take basic pictures. I have found that the face detection aspect of it does slow down the picture taking. This is especially hard to overcome when trying to take pictures of small chilren who do not hold poses. The quality is excellent though.

I am impressed with the quality for the size of this camera. The viewing screen is bright. I brought it for its size and one of the few cameras that still have an eye viewer for those sunny days when the LCD is viewable.

I will admit freely to being the ulitmate girly-girl and primarily purchasing this camera because it is my favourite colour (brown) and would match 90% of my wardrobe However, I am very impressed by the quality of the pics. I have had the camera only 2 days now but I have taken it everywhere with me ( it is small enough to fit in your pocket…really tiny) and have gotten some amazing shots.Those 8 MPs really work! I have always been a Canon fanatic and they have not disappointed me yet.

Defective Battery   March 7, 2008
I got this camera for my sister for her 12th birthday this February. When the product came, the battery was defective. I had to call customer service a few times to try to get a new battery. They finally told me that it happens often and they will ship out a new one right away. The camera itself is pretty thin but a little big. The pictures taken were average. The LCD screen in the back was bigger than other cameras.

I bought this camera for a recent deployment. My old one was at the end of its chain and wasn’t going to make another deployment. So I did some research online, I wanted a camera with good battery life, good picture quality, using a standard SD card and would easily fit in a pocket. I wanted all of that in a package that cost as little as possible, so if it didn’t survive the deployment I wouldn’t feel all that bad about it. And that is exactly what I got in the Exilim and I couldn’t be more pleased.Being around the size of a deck of cards I am thrilled with how easy this camera is to carry around. The pictures it takes are very high quality and not being a true photographer but the king of the snap shot, it works for me. The only possible complaint would be the LCD you view your photos on is not the greatest quality. It works but it is hard to tell if your pictures came out well until you get them on the computer. I ended up with the blue one, which is rather light blue and a bit girly, but its not something I could complain about considering the price I paid for it, which was right around the hundred dollar mark. All in all I am well pleased with this camera, and while I bought it for one deployment due to its quality I am sure it will survive the next couple of years without a problem.

Best of the superzooms   March 4, 2008
I have taken about 250 pictures with this now and owned it for almost a month. Most of the pictures came out well even the ones were I pointed the camera out the window while driving at 55, on a bright day. The 18X zoom gets you close to things even three hundred feet away.
The good, metal threads for tripod, high capacity (4GB and larger) SDHC cards, 18X zoom, very good anti shake, easy controls, very good results on full auto, very good burst mode (multiplr shots while holging down the shutter release), good results freezing action.
The cautions SDHC cards probably mean you have to buy a new card reader, propriatary USB connector, and battery mean you have to have a spare. Monopod or tripod for lowlight shots. 3MB per picture average so larger and faster memory cards required (4GB, SDHC, class 6 or larger not the cheap cards). The lens assembly is threaded but heavy filters are not a good idea but lighter filters will be fine.
I am just an old man with time and a camera and get good results with this camera. Has good range types of shots and handles settings well on auto. My picture taking philosophy is take a lot of pictures and hope to get a few keepers and this camera does that. Freezes action well with good clarity.

The perfect upgrade   February 11, 2008
I was using the Nikon D50 for the last 18 months before deciding to upgrade my camera body. I knew I was outgrowing the D50. I was beginning to see the inconvenience of some of the features of the D50 because I was going into menus more and more frequently.
I initially thought of the D80 but felt it was not enough of an upgrade. I then looked at the D200, but the D300 was just announced and I knew that was the one I would upgrade to.
I am very pleased that I chose this camera. The buttons are well placed and eliminates me from having to go into the menus as often and even then, the My Menu function allows me to add my favotire functions to my own custom menu.
I also love the low light/high ISO capabilities. I do a lot of dusk/night shots in the street and find my results are better than I could ever do with my D50.
The last thing I love is the build. It just feels right in my hands. The addition of the MB-D10 grip is not needed, but is an added benefit for further balancing the camera with a long pro-level zoom lens.
Overall, I have not been disappointed and would recommend this to anyone looking to upgrade to a semi-pro camera.

Perfect in everything   February 10, 2008
I had a d40x and i bought the D300,while i really liked my previous camera, but the D300 is a really different ones,a camera that you would depend on for a longer time.im not saying the D40x isnt that good,but after time u will feel u would need something with more capabilities, and here where the D300 fits, what a camera…best in everything,ergonomics,quality of pics,options available for adjustments.higher ISO, u even feel u wouldnt be in need to lower aperture lenses, the only bad thing about it for me is the weight,i know i would get used to it, but that was my first impression compared to the D40x weight, which is almost half weight,another bad thing that it went down $ 50 after i just bought it:))

Ramblings from a DSLR newbie…   February 9, 2008
Got this as an upgrade from the Nikon D40 (which I had for about 1 week), a D200, (which I had for a couple of days). I’ve had this for about 2 months, and it have journeyed over 2000 clicks with me.

Pro’s:
-beautiful 3 inch LCD screen. This was my primary drive for getting this camera. It makes previewing your shots a pleasure. The LCD screen is bright enough even to view in sunlight.
-long battery life, you can shoot all day long, and still have some charge left. Buy an additional battery and you are clearly set for all day shooting (The battery life is greatly improved over the d200)
-sturdy construction. This thing is built like a rock. I brought this on the slopes of keystone Colorado snowboarding in January, and it braved the cold weathers and bumps nicely (I managed not to drop it in the snow, but I’m sure it would have survived that)
-nice sticky grip. The surface is some kind of rubbery substance that encourages you not to drop it. (helps a lot with one hand grip holding)
-easy layout of controls.
-a plethora of features, liveview, active dlighting, menu customization
-great high ISO shooting.
-nice auto focus system
-fantastic pictures

Cons:
-a little heavy. (hefting this camera with the 70-200vr plus a camera bag with a couple other lenses all day around a zoo will make you tired. =) ) Note, heavy is actually a pro too, as it very nicely balances out lenses like 17-55 and 70-200, as those lenses are heavy by themselves.
-live view is a little clunky, and sluggish

This is a very nice piece of equipment. It’s so nice, it makes you want to love it more and more, and take more pictures with it. =)

Moving from D80 to D300   February 9, 2008
At first it felt a bit bulky but as I got used to it, it just felt right. The quality of images is perceivably way better than the ones I took with the D80, and that was a camera I loved.
Lot of parameters on the D300 menu to play with though, so it makes for a significant learning time.
